Rice allays CIA prison row fears

European ministers are satisfied with Condoleezza Rice's explanation on the issue
of alleged secret CIA prisons overseas, Nato and EU officials say.

They met the US secretary of state ahead of a meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Brussels.

US Congress members who campaigned on the issue say it is a major concession. The White House
denies a policy shift.

Nato and EU foreign ministers said Ms Rice had assured them, at a closed-door meeting on Wednesday
evening, that the US did not interpret international humanitarian law differently from its allies.

1. umm. the EU/UN had been very critical of our behaviors. What did Rice
tell them (when WH insists we have not changed policy)?

7. ?
From the article...

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the meeting was "very satisfactory for all of us".

Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Bot, one of those most concerned by the issue, also said he was "very satisfied".

2. Rice has allayed fears of Europreans regarding complicity
They feared she wouldn't be able to double talk her way round the issues involved-- but she can talk non-sense about as well as her master.

What is the perjorative name for the Vichy gov't in France-- collaborators?

We're all in bed together now. Disgusting.

5. so just because she says (in a vague and qualified way)
that we don't torture, that's it then. All is well, even though we continue to torture.

Complaints that U.S. condoned torture dogs secretary of state's Europe trip

BRUSSELS, Belgium - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is prepared to address European doubts about U.S. practices in the war on terror during a gathering of NATO countries, her spokesman says.

Complaints that the United States has overstepped its bounds and may have practiced or condoned torture have dogged Rice through a four-nation tour this week.

==SNIP==

Also Wednesday, the U.N. human rights chief warned that the global ban on torture was becoming a casualty of the “war on terror,” singling out reported U.S. practices of sending terrorist suspects to other countries and holding prisoners in secret detention.

Louise Arbour’s comments sparked an immediate rebuke from U.S. Ambassador John Bolton, who said it was “inappropriate and illegitimate for an international civil servant to second-guess the conduct that we’re engaged in the war on terror, with nothing more as evidence than what she reads in the newspapers.”
