Poll: Bush's Ratings Bottom Out
There is good news and bad news in this poll for President George W. Bush. Americans have become more positive about the economy; more than half think the economy is in good shape, an 8-point increase since October.

The President’s overall approval rating has risen from 35 percent in October to 40 percent now, and his ratings on handling the economy and the war in Iraq have also improved.

But while this poll shows some improvement in Americans’ views about how the war in Iraq is going, most continue to say it is going badly. Americans remain firm in their desire for U.S. troops to at least start coming home, and would like to see a timetable for that process.

Although President Bush has said he will not do this, 58 percent of Americans want the United States to set a timetable for troop withdrawal.

What else do you need to know?
Knight-Ridder is the only US press organization I have any respect for at all, and they are bankrupt.
I figure we are on our own when it comes be being informed citizens.

At this time of year, people are much more positive about world around them...

I pointed this out late last month when the Bush numbers started to track up....

Wait until February when gas prices skyrocket again. His #s will go down.

And they won't get anywhere near election-winning levels until we all have good paying jobs again (hah! I'm more likely to get married to a Playboy magazine model...)

25. Don't dispare good Dems...
All that happened was that his idiot hard-core supporters started coming back to him.

40% is still a very shitty number.

His supporters began to abandon him over:

1) Katrina

2) Harriet Myers (I think this had more to do with it than anything)

3) Gas prices.

So gas prices levelled off, Myers was replaced by Scalito, and the press got the memo from New Orleans. All is well in Bushland again according to the dittoheads.

The only problem for Bush is that everyone else thinks he's a major league asshole. He's lost the independants for good.

P.S. 40% is still lower than anything Clinton ever got.

the margins of error overlap so it is possible that there has been no change at all. With a 3% margin of error, 35% and 40% are not significantly (in the mathematical sense of the word) different.

edited for spelling

10. It will continue to follow gas prices
which puts the little jerk onto the horns of quite a dilemma: does he sacrifice his own popularity to pay off his oil buddies, or does he stab his buddies in the back to gain a few popularity points?

Ah, decisions, decisions. I'm sure he needs a hug.

23. I think that's right
We have stood on a downtown corner in Laramie, WY every Friday night for nearly 3 years with signs saying, "Honk for Peace." One of the regulars has noticed a definite pattern between gas prices and the amount of honks we get.

I have another theory about why gas prices matter so much. There is no other commodity which has its price so loudly and boldly announced. How many gas stations do you pass every day? I can't think of any other commodity where the price is so much in your face. You feel affected by it, whether your tank is on full or empty.

12. I do not believe this. Not for one minute. His ratings are not getting any
kind of bounce. What's happening is the media are getting nervous, they see their boy is tanking, so they're being very careful who they question, what they ask, and how they ask it. No way. Not when more people are saying they'd vote Democrat if they had the chance to vote again.

NO FRIGGING WAY.

24. another interesting piece
I saw an analysis of new poll numbers -- which, you'll notice stopped for a while because, as you say, the media was too nervous to ask the questions for a while -- and they pointed out that there's a very scary underlying number for the White House: the "strongly opposed" numbers are hardening and have now reached into the 40s.

So, these may show 40% approving -- and in some polls that number will be including "strongly approve" and "somewhat approve." What they're not saying is that there's more than another 40% who strongly disapprove.

Please. These people throw out cheap media poll's to back up whatever story they want to spin. They'll say anything- and if they don't have the results they want on hand- they'll hire some pollsters who'll design poll results they want.

The media's been doing this so long- and so few question it, that it's gotten to be the normal course of business.

44. Isn't it amazing how
all the news media will follow suit with faux news and have their polls within a one or two point difference than faux.... two weeks ago faux finally had bush in the high 30's and was the last news media to poll, and now this week they were the first to come out that bush was at 42%. Followed by CBS at 40% and now ABC at 42%.Look for NBC to have bush at 44%....

I watched Lou Dobbs this afternoon and he and ole Bill S. were gushing about the new poll numbers form CBS that gave bush 40%. He is rebounding.. His message is getting through......
