No "insurgents" to be found in Bush speech

WASHINGTON, Dec 7 (Reuters) - The White House danced around on Wednesday about whether "insurgents" was an acceptable term for the enemy of U.S.-led forces in Iraq.

Bush did not use the term in his 34-minute speech on Wednesday at the Council on Foreign Relations. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld last week argued that those fighting U.S.-led forces in Iraq did not deserve to be called an "insurgency."

...

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said he had not heard any discussion that the term should be made taboo.

But he said it was important for Americans to "have a clear sense of who the enemy is." Bush has called them rejectionists, Saddamists, and terrorists.

2. I thought you meant only people who signed loyalty oaths attended
as in no "insurgents" or people who attended the speech without signing loyalty oaths could be found at Bush speech.

10. True. RumsFailed trotted himself out
last week and said "No more insurgents".

The old fool probably thinks that since he clicked 'Delete' on the name, they're gone too.

I wish he was.

9. Insurgents. So two days ago.
Didn't you get the memo? They're "car bombers" and "assassins". Both Shrub and Dick said it yesterday.

11. Insurgents?
Not only is the President intellectually bankrupt, he is also seemingly confused and disconnected from the reality that he, and his fellow chicken hawks really have opened "the gates of hell." by invading a sovereign nation under false pretenses. Under any other circumstances, those in Iraq who are now fighting an invasion turned occupation would be called what they are.... THE RESISTANCE.
W and co. can play with words and titles all they want, but what they have done to American prestige around the world is irrevocable! Just like they won't call the prosecution of Sadam Hussein what it is... a SHOW TRIAL! It is painfully obvious that the only "advisors" this President listens to, are the PR Firms chosen by Rove to "Save W's Legacy." Just like the speech Bush gave in front of another group of American Service Men and Women at the Navel Academy the other night. During that speech he used the word, "VICTORY" so many times that even the "Prop" audience of Navel cadets, ordered to be enthusiastic, seemed to me to be falling asleep in fairly large numbers.

14. Welcome to DU...
I enjoyed your post, and completely agree with you. Bush is disconnected from reality, and refuses to listen to any opinions which don't agree with his own. He is a disaster for the world, unless you're a crony. I look forward to reading more of your responses. Again, welcome...:hi: :hi:

15. they are backsliding
we've been through this before, this word game. and yes, i'd say 'the resistance' is the best term to use and by far the most accurate. but their MESSAGE is simple, that ANYONE who dares attack the brave vanguard of freeeeedom is by definition a terrorist.

16. Saddamists?
When did that one come about? I first heard it a couple of days ago and it really made me cringe. Should we refer to republicans as Bushists?

18. I prefer to refer to Republicans as "assholes."
And these particular assholes parse the English language to a degree far beyond the capabilities of the speaker himself. There's always a reason, and the reason is usually so that they can deny saying what they said earlier. See, "gathering" as a synonym for "imminent." See also, "Saddam" as a synonym for "Osama."

19. Good point.
Do you think "sought uranium", rather than "tried to buy", is an example of that tactic?
