AUSTIN -- Heartened by a pending trial date, lawyers for Texas Democrats and other groups fighting a Republican congressional redistricting plan travel to Marshall today for a preliminary hearing in federal court.
Among the items to be discussed is a proposal by a three-judge federal panel to begin a combined trial of several suits challenging the new map during the week of Dec. 8 in Austin.
"We think it (the trial setting) is good news for Texas, and we think it's good news for our side," said Gerald Hebert, a lawyer for Democrats who are asking the federal panel to block use of the new congressional districts in the 2004 elections.
Hebert said a Dec. 8 trial would give Democrats enough time to prove the redistricting plan is illegal and persuade the court to halt its use before the March 9 primaries.
