WP: 'Holiday' Cards Ring Hollow for Some on Bushes' List
Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 10:39 PM by RamboLiberal
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/06/AR2005120601900.html

What's missing from the White House Christmas card? Christmas.

<snip>

Many people are thrilled to get a White House Christmas card, no matter what the greeting inside. But some conservative Christians are reacting as if Bush stuck coal in their stockings.

"This clearly demonstrates that the Bush administration has suffered a loss of will and that they have capitulated to the worst elements in our culture," said William A. Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights.

Bush "claims to be a born-again, evangelical Christian. But he sure doesn't act like one," said Joseph Farah, editor of the conservative Web site WorldNetDaily.com. "I threw out my White House card as soon as I got it."

<snip>

Then along comes a generic season's greeting from the White House, paid for by the Republican National Committee. The cover art is also secular, if not humanist: It shows the presidential pets -- two dogs and a cat -- frolicking on a snowy White House lawn.

Some quotes:

I just love when religious conservatives set about to destroy a President who is on their side. Very clever of them. My advice on this issue to these folks: STFU.

Look at the people WaPo quotes in the first paragraph: Joe Farrah and Bill Donahue. The first is a liar and the second is a buffoon who sees anti-Catholic bias in a phone ring tone.

and then I come back to DU and here's this great thread.

At the afa site they have a list of retailers who have "banned" Christmas, with contact info for each, as well as contact info for the kooks at afa.

I have to send them all this article, let retailers know what a bunch of morons are attacking them, and let afa know what a buch of morons they are.

I wonder if they'll boycott bush now.

AAAAhahahhha!

This is great!

They can't be be bothered to read that pesky bible thingie or let Jesus's actual lessons get in the way of a good rant against retailers for not using the word "Christmas" as a means to solitic our cash.

Are you trying to say that Christ died for something more important than that? You must be from the old school or something.

Put into it's proper context I now see they were talking about the Prince of Peace not the fundies old testament god of war. My fault for not reading the article.

They want the rest of the world to be as pissed off and angry as they are about life.

I find myself getting angry at them for being such miserable jerks but then I remember that old Chinese proverb: "resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die."

So screw 'em. Let 'em be angry. Let them boycott Target and Best Buy and whoever else they want. If they were really concerned about the true meaning of Christmas they'd boycott all the retailers for turning Christmas into a consumerism-driven holiday. It shouldn't be about the presents and the gifts anyway.

http://www.armed-prayer.org/sword_strikes.htm

Every promise found in the Scriptures is a sword wound in our enemy, deadly in force. As the end of the world draws nearer, the devil and his evil army are pressing forward every chance they can get for they know their time is short.

Each Prayer Warrior has a sphere of influence--family and friends, acquaintances--that no one else has; our assurance of victory over evil is based upon the integrity and infallibility of the Bible. By using these promises we are verbally declaring our faith in our Commander-in-Chief and His Word. AND they push back the enemy and immobilize their attack.

37. Hypocrisy in action. All of Psalm 28
28:1 A Psalm of David. Unto thee, O the Lord, do I call; my Rock, be not Thou deaf unto me; lest, if Thou be silent unto me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

28:2 Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto Thee, when I lift up my hands toward Thy holy Sanctuary.

28:3 Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity; who speak peace with their neighbours, but evil is in their hearts.

28:4 Give them according to their deeds, and according to the evil of their endeavours; give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert.

28:5 Because they give no heed to the works of the Lord, nor to the operation of His hands; He will break them down and not build them up.

28:6 Blessed be the Lord, because He hath heard the voice of my supplications.

28:7 the Lord is my strength and my shield, in Him hath my heart trusted, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth, and with my song will I praise Him.

28:8 the Lord is a strength unto them; and He is a stronghold of salvation to His anointed.

28:9 Save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance; and tend them, and carry them for ever.

They bought him, they own him. They don't realize that their ownership is not exclusive. Neocons own him more.

So stupid, can't even realize they're being used. If they paid more attention to the words of Jesus instead of their own, maybe they would wise up.

I like the idea of the pets, but it's actually to portray a "human" side of bush and make him seem "likeable." Total BS. He couldn't care less about those pets. He's always seen holding Barney. Has he ever been seen even one time petting Barney, scratching his ears or around his tail, kissing him on the noggin?

This month, as in every December since he took office, President Bush sent out cards with a generic end-of-the-year message, wishing 1.4 million of his close friends and supporters a happy "holiday season."

Many people are thrilled to get a White House Christmas card, no matter what the greeting inside. But some conservative Christians are reacting as if Bush stuck coal in their stockings.

My favorite quote:

"I think it's more important to put Christ back into our war planning than into our Christmas cards," said the council's general secretary, the Rev. Bob Edgar, a former Democratic congressman.

tries to win friends and influence people, they should just be glad that he didn't specify "Happy Hannukah" or "Joyous Ramadan" (and leave off or alienate his "base").

I hear Cheney's cards are gonna say "F U".

48. neocons and RWers start a fraudulent war and now they're focused
on the phrase "holiday greetings" instead of "Merry Christmas." What a bunch of pathetic imbeciles.

52. WHAT IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY?!??!

Bush "claims to be a born-again, evangelical Christian. But he sure doesn't act like one," said Joseph Farah, editor of the conservative Web site WorldNetDaily.com.

WorldNutDaily gets a Christma...holiday card from the white house? Jesus FUCK. That'd be like Kerry sending a card to Tom Flocco.

67. The Christmas nazis are fucking insane
I'm sorry, but people running around braying about saying "Christmas" instead of "Holiday" are the most dimwitted bunch of freaks on the planet.

Do these people not have lives? WTF does it matter if someone doesn't want to participate in their pious pseudo-religious orgy of consumption?

Idiots!

79. So true. Now they're making wristbands that say
"just say merry christmas" - this was featured on CNN today and everyone's making a big deal about it, as if they're victims. Ludicrous. Sorry, but maybe saying happy holidays IS the more 'Christian' thing to do when you're dealing with a diverse crowd... don't assume everybody wants to hear about Christmas, but most would appreciate a kind wish to enjoy the season.

88. Their website does not say where the bands are made
http://www.operationjustsaymerrychristmas.com

This article says they have sold out two shipments of the bands:
http://www.thehometownchannel.com/money/5492751/detail.html

So again I can't help but wonder if these are made in China like so many others are. Anyhow to me this is so silly. For one these people aren't being persecuted because they can't force everyone else to say the words they want to hear. Another reason is that so much of what modern American Christmas has nothing to do with Jesus. If they want to get back to Jesus and get rid of the secular and pagan they would have to dump trees, wreaths, every bit of tinsel, glitter, and flashing lights for starters. Add many of which are made in China and other countries where the workers are not paid a living wage. These are all add ons and some are totally against what I though Jesus stood for. I can't help but laugh thinking about these people getting riled up in the name of their very pagan-influenced and extremely secular holiday.

72. Gee, Mr. Donohue...

"I threw out my White House card as soon as I got it."

...if I were you, I'd be happy that Dubya doesn't, in Farah's words, "act like a born-again, evangelical Christian." Otherwise, he might be denouncing Roman Catholicism as a "non-Christian cult" or even a "pagan, 'works-righteousness' religion," claiming that the Pope is the anti-Christ and that Rome is really "the Great Whore of Babylon"...just like so many fundies do when they're not trying to recruit Roman Catholics into their political movement ("We'll help you outlaw abortion if you help us crack down on the gays").

78. Anyone see Donahue on CNN this morning?
Miles O'Brien asked him if Jesus would be upset at receiving a holiday card. Donahue said, "I don't know. I've never met Jesus".

Truer words were never spoken.
