Ohio is one of a half-dozen states where recent controversies have erupted over the teaching of alternate theories to evolution, especially intelligent design (ID).
.......
In 2002, the Ohio Board of Education adopted a new science curriculum that mentioned evolution by name for the first time. But a year later, ID got a firm foothold in the state when the board approved a master biology lesson called the “Critical Analysis of Evolution.”
The lesson does not mention ID, but outraged scientists say it uses language prevalent in ID literature and will facilitate teaching of the concept.
Teachers are not required to use the state’s master lesson. But material from the new science standards may be on the Ohio Graduation Test, which students must pass in order to receive a high school diploma.
