Lieberman Calls For Formation Of 'War Cabinet'

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, increasingly isolated in his own Democratic party because of his strong support for the Iraq war, today called on the White House and congressional leaders to form a special "war cabinet" to provide advice and direction for the war effort.

The Connecticut Democrat's "Bipartisan Victory in Iraq Administrative Group," designed to take some of the political edge off the war debate, would be modeled after similar panels during the Vietnam War and World War II.

Lieberman, whom the Bush administration has praised repeatedly for his war stance, defended the president. "It's time for Democrats who distrust President Bush to acknowledge he'll be commander-in-chief for three more years," the senator said. "We undermine the president's credibility at our nation's peril."

There was no immediate response from the White House or congressional leaders.

101. I don't want to get into a Clark vs. Kucinich debate here, but
I'm certain either one of them would have been part of the implementation had they been elected President, however, I believe Kucinich is the only one in Congress at the moment and the only one who made the attempt w/what little influence a minority in the minority party has.

Clark, at this point of his political career, can only lobby Congress. Kucinich can attempt to get legislation on the floor.

Watched him today on C-SPAN & had to quick switch the channel :puke: He purposely caused our Dem's to look like there was inner-turmoil and MSNBC/CNN went all over it.

Not one to bash our Dems, but LIEberman is a necon a$$wipe.

They'd think we were ALL as looney as you and Chimpy.

39. It would act as a firewall
Any heat coming from Congress or the public at large about the Iraq War (sic) would be directed squarely at this "committee". They would hem and haw and shuffle their feet a lot, while eventually issuing some vanilla statement urging the Prez to pay attention to some glaring issue. The Prez then thanks them and takes a still more lukewarm action to address their concerns.

It buys time in other words. Everyone will look to the committee to do something, and they will make noises like they are, but in the end they won't do anything but take the attention off the president for a year. An example of this sort of group would be the 9/11 commission. You don't really believe their purpose was ever anything but to quiet the people do you? They were supposed to look earnest, let a lot of time go by, and issue meaningless reprimands and suggestions.

Good work!

34. Bipartisan War Cabinet? Lieberman Doesn't Get It...
Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 03:04 PM by VogonGlory
So Senator Lieberman is calling for a bi-partisan war cabinet. He doesn't get it. Even if most of the Democratic Party, let alone the rest of the country, agreed with the GW Bush administration's Iraq war aims (And most of us don't), Lieberman has forgotten the most consistent characteristics of the incumbent administration--dishonesty, partisanship, and treachery.

After the 2002 elections, only a hopeless fool would consider bipartisanship with the incumbent administration. Bipartisanship with the GW Bush administration is an invitation to date rape.

37. Lieberman is a disgrace.
I, as a Californian, freely admit that I did not vote for Gore/Lieberman. I correctly saw Lieberman as a dangerous war maniac.

Lieberman Calls For Formation Of 'War Cabinet'
11:43 AM EST, December 6, 2005
By DAVID LIGHTMAN, The Hartford Courant WASHINGTON --

Sen.

Lieberman made his comments to an audience at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, a sympathetic Washington research group. The war debate, Lieberman said, is being too poisoned by partisanship.

44. Holy Joe wants Iraq to become a Democratic war!
This is nothing but a call for a coalition government, dropping all pretenses that the Democrats are an opposition party on the war.

I am getting sick!

63. Not only would I vote for Weicker, I'd work my ass for for him.
He could run as a third party candidate, many Republicans would probably vote for him, as well as most independents and quite a few Democrats. Imagine Bush coming to Connecticut to campaign for Joe? I can.

WAR on anyone yet...........unless you are keeping something

We are tired of your painfully smiling endorsement of MASS MURDER. You are going to be forever vilified as a top rank WAR CRIMINAL and TRAITOR to the best interests of the United States of America. You, like your co-AIPAC agent Hillary dare come to us reeking of death and we reject you with ALL that is decent within us. The sooner we never see you any more, the sooner we can completely cleanse our minds of your foul image and sickening utterances.

98. This Is Great! Really.
The more New Middle Dems like Joe and Hil do shit like this the more of a guaranteed liberal backlash. I want a backlash so big we move the party back to where it was in 2000. It has drifted so far right that its New Middle is becoming indistinguishable from the Old Middle Republicans.

Yes please Joe and Hil keep pissing off the leftwing base rile us the fuck up, you are making my job so much easier....

....nurturing the backlash as lovingly as possible.

100. The NY Post had his speech on their opinion page
which tells you about where Lieberman stands.

My LTE to the NY Post:

Dear Editor:

As a newly minted Democrat, converted because of disgust over the lies told about WMDs and the personal, disgraceful attacks undertaken by Bush and his minions on John Kerry, a veteran who actually served as opposed to going AWOL as Bush did, Joe Lieberman's op-ed piece made me actually laugh out loud!!

Lieberman wants bipartisanship on the war. Every single time the Democrats have tried to act in a bipartisan fashion, such as giving Bush the green light to use force against Saddam Hussein, they have been lied to and then later used and blamed, as Bush is blaming them now for supporting the war, falsely claiming that they had the same classified information that he had. Anyone with a modicum of knowledge knows that the President gets all of the classified information, while Congress gets only what the President and Vice President want them to get.

Joe Lieberman is no Democrat; he should switch to the Republican party, and do us all a favor.
