US detentions abuse Iraq mandate: UN

The US military is abusing its United Nations mandate in Iraq by detaining thousands of people without due process of law, a senior UN official says.

The Iraqi government installed after the US invasion of 2003 is also guilty of major human rights abuses, including holding people without charge in secret jails "littered" across the country, John Pace, human rights chief for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), told Reuters.

...

"There is no question that terrorism has to be addressed. But we are equally sure that the remedies being applied ... are not the best way of eliminating terrorism," Pace said.

"More terrorists are being created than are being eliminated."

2. Scotty at Friday's press briefing.
Scotty at Friday's press briefing.

The President has made it very clear that we do not torture, he would never condone torture or authorize the use of torture. If someone doesn't abide by our laws, they're held accountable, and we have done that.

That's the difference between us and others. When it comes to human rights, there is no greater leader than the United States of America, and we show that by holding people accountable when they break the law or they violate human rights. And we show that by supporting the advance of freedom and democracy and supporting those in countries that are having their human rights denied or violated, like North Korea. We show that by liberating people in Afghanistan and Iraq, some 50 million people. And no one has done more when it comes to human rights than the United States of America.

"Essentially none of these people have any real recourse to protection and therefore we speak … of a total breakdown in the protection of the individual in this country.

5. I wouldn't want to be standing close to Scotty
when God finally decides to strike him with lightening for the many lies he tells. We DO torture, that's obvious, and has been documented in film and pictures, as well as eye-witness accounts. If we don't torture, and won't torture, why the refusal to accept the anti-torture portion of a bill?

Do these clowns not realize how absolutely idiotic they sound to the rest of the world? Sheesh...and as far as holding people without due process for years, it seems to me that due process has always been one of the cornerstones of democracy. So, we claim to be bringing democracy to Iraq by ignoring democratic principles? Only in Bushworld.
