Evolution foes seek changes in Missouri
By Tim Hoover
Kansas City Star
Friday, Dec. 2, 2005

While debate rages in Kansas over teaching “intelligent design,” similar proposals in Missouri have yet to grow legs.

For several years, bills in the Missouri legislature to require the teaching of intelligent design or mandate that textbooks criticize evolution have gone nowhere because lawmakers have resisted efforts to dictate teaching standards and materials.

.......

But Missouri critics of evolution are encouraged by the Kansas Board of Education’s recent adoption of science standards that call for criticism of evolution. Opponents say the move opens the door for the teaching of intelligent design.

“I think Kansas is doing the right thing,” said Rep. Cynthia Davis, a St. Louis County Republican who last year filed a bill that would have required biology textbooks to include “critical analysis of origins.”

4. Dover may not be settled just yet...
The losing candidates are contesting the election results due to a faulty voting machine.

3. I hate living here
Missouri sucks so much ass! The majority in this area believe that there is an atheist agenda that has been removing God from Schools. Although there are liberal sections of the kansas city area basically it's a typical red state

8. What the heck is an evolution foe?
Anything like an oceanography foe, or maybe an astronomy foe? Must fight that evil evolution. Must stop it dead in its tracks. Wouldn't want to train any new research scientists. They might cure cancer or something.

9. I wouldn't worry too much about it
There is a backlash building here, that's going to hurt the retiles here. People are sick of what the religious reich and the reptiles have done here, even many jesus freaks have a bad taste in their mouthes after coming out in droves last year.
Sure, they were smiling when they voted against gay marriage, but, now, they're feeling the pinch of all the social services cut to the bone. Having to pay for ma and pa's drugs, and having to take care of them is not what they voted for.
Come next year and in 08 we're going to spank these asswipes good.

10. OK - Then they must teach ALL religions from Asatru to Zoroastrianism
 After all each religion has it's own theory on Intelligent Design. Since they are demanding that alternative views be offered it is only just and fair way to handle it IMO

BTW here is a petition being sent to state governers saying they should keep science in the classroom and leave religion to houses of worship:
http://ga3.org/campaign/church_state

Dear ( Governor ),

I am deeply concerned about the Kansas State School Board's recent decision to revise Kansas' science education standards and the definition of science to allow any "logical explanations" for phenomena to be taught in the classroom.

I do not oppose exposing our children to philosophical and spiritual discussion around the origin and meaning of life - just not in the context of teaching science in a public school science classroom.

Therefore, I urge you ensure that our state's science curriculum and standards continue to emphasize evolution as a unifying concept in science and its overall explanatory power.

Our nation's future rests in the hands of our children. As American children continue to fall behind the rest of the world in math and science, the last thing we need to be doing is denying them an education based on the best available scientific knowledge.

Our children need schools that teach science, not ideology, as they prepare for the challenges of a new century.

11. a St. Louis county Republican, huh?
I didn't think those existed....wait (*looks it up*), she represents St. CHARLES County. Now it all makes sense.

http://www.house.state.mo.us/bills053/member/bio019.htm

Rep. Cynthia Davis, a Republican, represents part of St. Charles County (District 19) in the Missouri House of Representatives. She was elected to the House in November 2002.

In addition to her legislative duties, Rep. Davis is owner and gift buyer of Back to Basics Christian Bookstore, and was a recipient of the O’Fallon Business Association’s “Business of the Year Award.”

I'm not too worried. There are plenty of people here pissed at Gov. Blunt's gutting of Medicare/Medicaid and education cuts. Then again, our state legislature has been known to pass legislation after the people vote against it (CCW), so you never know.

13. This is scary
I live in Kansas but work in Missouri. And frankly, I expected Missouri to move towards creationism before Kansas.

I halfway expect this to happen anytime now. Right now, they are busy debating stem cell research. So the fundies could try to sneak this in while we aren't paying attention.

15. when will these dorks learn
that just because they want to defy the logic of science with mythology, that the laws of science won't change. Just because they don't believe in evolution (or gravity, or quantum physics) does not change the fact that it exists. And the facts of science will not go away; no matter how they try to explain it with a quote from their King James Version.

(never mind that to understand the meaning of the KJV, one must be fluent in Elizabethan English, since word meanings and usage have changed since then...)

Now back to the regularly scheduled burning of the Yule log. Happy Solstice, one and all.
