Black Woman Among Contenders for NJ Senate

Don't know NJ politics, but I wish Missouri would think this bold.

1. For some reason I think America would be a lot better off...
if more Afro-American women were running things.

Many of these are women know what it takes to keep families together under very trying conditions.

Perhaps they should apply their knowledge in keeping the country together.

2. What a headline
:eyes:

Couldn't it say "State Sen. Nia Gill Among Contenders..." ?

Maybe I am ridiculously optimistic, but I really wish we could get to a point where "black woman" doesn't show up until at least the 3rd or 4th paragraph. Or at all. How often does "white man" show up in the headline? "White man indicted!" "Another White Man Indicted" I mean, it would only be fair

5. I completely agree.
One of my best friends has to take this sort of crap all the time, in the form of a compliment: "you're so well spoken."

As he often says, there is an invisible clause backing up that compliment. The full compliment is, "you're so well spoken, for a black man."

6. Corzine May Tap Minority for Senate Seat
Corzine May Tap Minority for Senate Seat
By DONNA DE LA CRUZ, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Shortly after being elected New Jersey's governor, Democrat Jon Corzine speculated aloud that he might appoint a woman to fill out his unexpired Senate term. Then he singled out black state Sen. Nia Gill, calling her an "extraordinarily capable woman."

Gill did not shy away from the hint.

"I have the qualifications," she told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "If I am chosen by Jon, I am more than qualified to rise to the occasion."

If Corzine does select Gill — a 57-year-old attorney — she would become only the sixth black, and second black woman ever to serve in the U.S. Senate. New Jersey has never had a female or minority U.S. senator. The only black woman to serve in the U.S. Senate was Carol Mosely-Braun of Illinois.

Political analysts say that by choosing Gill, Corzine would be seen as rewarding a faithful base that turned out for him on Election Day — and possibly sending a signal about his higher political aspirations.

We could use more diversity in the Senate and it's about time people stop thinking that Condi Rice is the only black woman in the world with any credentials.

14. Corzine, should have
when he had all the media exposure after he won the govenors race, the next day still with the exposure made this appointment. This was the golden opportunity, but no he had to start listening to all the party bosses throughout the state.Hell, the man is too damn rich to listen to anyone, expecially party bosses that want this one or that one....He best go with the one that can win in November 06.
What he needs to do is not prolong this announcement and make it sometime before the holidays.
