Bill would put "God Bless America" on Alabama car tags
The phrase "God Bless America" would be added to Alabama's already crowded license plates if a bill proposed by a state legislator becomes law.

State Rep. Steve Hurst, D-Munford, has prefiled a bill in the Alabama House that would require most Alabama car tags to include the phrase "God Bless America." Some specialty license plates and motorcycle tags would be exempt.

Hurst said he got the idea when the saw the words "God Bless America" on a specialty prisoner of war car tag.

"I thought why don't we do the same thing for all the tags in the state of Alabama. That will let all the people in America know that we are a Bible Belt state," Hurst said.

4. Can't they just put it on a bumper sticker?
Must it be affixed to a state emblem? Put all the religoius messages you want on a bumper sticker, but leave it off of a state symbol.

And yet this idea is a Dixiecra-,er, "Democrat's".

Freepers, you can have this guy if you want him.

That quote and the fact that he's a Dem make me think he's joking to get attention. Does anyone use "Bible Belt" in a complimentary sense? I don't think I've even heard fundies use it positively.

7. By my estimation
The only thing people in Mississippi have going for them is that they are not in Alabama. Roy Moore sealed the bottom of the barrel slot for Alabama for years to come, that and refusing to change the constitution for fear they'd be forced to provide an equal education to every child. Even when I lived in Biloxi in the 70's, Alabama was creepier than Mississippi. Sorry.

79. I figure that about the Alabama courts
but I would think that it would get stopped at the circuit court level. How bad is the 11th as far as being wingnuts? Normally I would think that it at least wouldn't get past the Supreme Court, but who knows what that's going to look like once * gets finished with it.

I still think that the legal challenges would be a costly mess.

It's just that for some strange reason, the majority don't seem to read their Gospels (or else, maybe there are different versions down there).

I think a more accurate take might be- Alabama's an Old Testiment state.

And that was established by the Jehovah's Witnesses of all people, who objected to Rhode Island making them drive around with "Live Free or Die" on the back of their car. They went all the way to the Supreme Court and it was upheld, as I recall not even by a narrow margin.

It is against Jewish law to write out the name of G-d on something that can be destroyed. So can they force me ( theoretically, of course, because I would never live in Alabama) to violate my religion?

Seems some Jew is going to have an opportunity to challenge a state law that makes it compulsory to violate his religious beliefs or pay for a special tag in it's stead.

57. WWJD?
Matthew 22:15-22 (New International Version)

15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?"

21 "Caesar's," they replied. Then he said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."

22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.

Let's see...Any instructions to his followers that his image or slogans were to be put on currency, governmental permits or documents? NOPE.

64. Let's make it federal, with "In god we trust".
That's already everywhere.

66. Uh, most people already KNOW you're a "Bible Belt State"....

69. Shouldn't it be available on one of the special plates, but not standard?
Have a "God Bless America" plate along with the Kid's first, the college plates, the DNR plates, etc.
