Most Americans are unaware of the increasingly tenuous position of the Bush-friendly regime of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the Philippines. Under pressure from her political opponents, with Islamic separatists in the South and Marxist liberation fighters in the North, Arroyo's government is trying to hang on to power. Arroyo's friendship with Bush may not serve this woman who took power via a coup and won an election by bribing election officials.

Fighting continued between communist gunmen and government soldiers in several Quezon villages, forcing more families to flee out of fear of getting caught in the crossfire.
In a clash in a village in Sariaya, Quezon, at least three persons were killed – an Army soldier, a civilian and a suspected communist gunman.
Classes in all schools in Candelaria have been suspended since Tuesday.
Remedios Carsocho, a Candelaria school teacher, said the fighting is scaring teachers and school children.
“I should be in school teaching my students. But now here I am sleeping in a jeep together with my family and neighbors,” Carsocho said.
She was one of the evacuees from the mountain village of Concepcion Pinagbakuran in Sariaya town.
