UN to Hold Largest Climate Conference Ever

November 25, 2005 12:30 p.m. EST

Ayinde O. Chase - All Headline News Staff Writer

Bonn, Germany (AHN) – The United Nations is hosting a Climate Change Conference beginning November 28 through December 9 in Montreal, Canada. The conference is expected to gather between 8,000 and 10,000 government delegates, business and civic leaders and environmental activists.

The assembly will be the largest meeting of its kind since the Kyoto Climate Conference in 1997.

"This meeting will not only be one of the largest climate change conferences ever, it will deliver a range of substantive results", says Richard Kinley, acting head of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat in Bonn, Germany.

Parties are expected to agree on steps to strengthen the clean development mechanism, a tool designed under the Protocol to support sustainable development projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries. The United Nations Climate Change Secretariat will be showcasing such projects at the conference.

2. Something must be done. We've altered the atmosphere in ways ...
unprecedented at least in the last million years or so. If the U.S. won't cooperate, the rest of the world will have to do what it can without such cooperation -- and perhaps pursue sanctions against the U.S. for doing so much to foul the environment.

5. I am not sure figures are available, but it wouldn't surprise
me if China is fouling the atmosphere way more than the USA. China is notorious for not using pollution controls

4. I hope New England shows up, and shames Bush ....
Last time (Buenos Aires last year), it was the hit of the entire conference. Bush is saying that he's not going to take part in the process, and meanwhile the New England states are making deals with Europe to get in on the new carbon-trading market. A lot of overseas press coverage (made it quite clear that there are many Americans who reject the White House's views).
