Documents tie Taylor to lobbyist in ethics case
Congressman denies relationship between donations, his actions

by John Solomon, and Sharon Theimer, The Associated Press
published November 25, 2005 6:00 am

WASHINGTON — More than a dozen members of Congress intervened to help Indian tribes win federal school construction money while accepting political donations from the tribes, their lobbyist Jack Abramoff or his firm.

The lawmakers hailed from both parties, including House Appropriations subcommittee Chairman Charles Taylor, R-N.C., and Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, the top Democrat on the Senate committee currently investigating Abramoff.

Most wrote letters that pressed a reluctant Bush administration to renew a program that provided tribes federal money for building schools. Others used the congressional budget process to ensure it happened, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

And most received donations, ranging from $1,000 to more than $74,000, in the weeks just before or after their intervention.

Casino Bribes?

Why am I not getting the connection.

Perhaps this piece of shit was planted by the GOP in our "mainstream media" AP wire reporters John Solomon and Sharon Theimer in box?

Indeed the stretch continues in later paragraphs where we learn the $1000 donations near the time of the school vote were similar to to the $440,000 donations near Casino votes.

And indeed Dems like Levin and Stabenow were convinced to back at least one tribe, the Saginaw, in their bid - and $2,000 was given to Stabenow after her vote in favor of the Saginaw. Wonder in the AP sees a difference between Dems getting 1 and 2 thousand an election cycle, and GOPers getting 50 to 100 thousand per vote?

Not exactly hot on the trail are we - but none can claim that the AP does not do the bidding of their GOP masters to the best of its ability.

5. Isn't this slimey? I've seen similar articles recently, attempting to

draw comparisons between the Republican casino corruption, and Democrats. It really could have been predicted we'd be seeing these almost immediately after it was established there would be prosecution of Abramoff and his co-conspirators. It would have been unlike Republicans to let this go by without trying to implicate others, no matter how far the stretch.

I declined posting the earlier articles, realizing they would lead the idiots among us jump to the wrong conclusions, and it would take too much time cosidering the effort vs. reward, trying to straighten them out on future threads.

6. Well it takes a lot more money to get a Republican to vote for schools
either that or Democrats just sell out a lot more cheaply than Republicans....

8. Taylor is my Rep. He is pure sleaze.
He panders to all the fundies in this district and does a lot of favors for his moneyed pals. He was also involved in a bank scandal that his last opponent was too afraid to touch. I hope Heath Shuler - who just announced his candidacy a couple of weeks ago - will have the stones to go after "Chainsaw" Charlie. Taylor is the dirtiest campaigner I've ever seen; our challenger will have to push back hard to have a shot.
