'35 to 40 nations' able to produce nuclear weapons

UN agency chief highlights need to reinforce Non-Proliferation Treaty as countries and terrorist groups harbour nuclear ambitions

PARIS - Up to 40 countries are believed to be capable of manufacturing nuclear weapons, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei has told a leading French newspaper.

That fact alone underlined the need to reinforce and update the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, he said.

Should any one of them decide to break its commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, experts believe it could produce a weapon in just a few months.

'We are already on the verge of catastrophe with North Korea,' Dr ElBaradei said.
