Bush Hails Mongolia for Backing Iraq War
ULAN BATOR, Mongolia - In the wake of congressional unrest over his war policies, President Bush thanked Mongolia on Monday for standing with him in Iraq and compared the struggle against Islamic radicalism to this country's battle against communism.

"Free people did not falter in the Cold War, and free people will not falter in the war on terror," the president said in a speech prepared for delivery to members of Parliament and others at the Government House.

Bush said Mongolia has stood with the United States as "brothers in the cause of freedom." He called Mongolians' success in driving communist leaders from power 15 years ago an example for the world.

"Like the ideology of communism, the ideology of Islamic radicalism is destined to fail — because the will to power is no match for the universal desire to live in freedom," Bush said.

1. This is one of those "What about Poland?" comments.....
He has nothing better to say so he praises a nation for helping him fight his war with Iraq in exchange for foreign aid. Great trade off.

4. I thought this was going to be an Onion piece.
Bush touts his achievements in Mongolia, and then donates money to start the Ghenghis Khan Presidential Library. Bush then spoke for several minutes without a script, saying how Ghenghis Khan was one of his favorite historical figures, and saying he prefered John Wayne's portrayal to Ricardo Montalban's.

He must be getting tired of giving the same old speech again and again.

Now, look at his schedule in mongolia
even this sounds like the onion.

http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/1105/279551.html

"Besides his speech, Bush's schedule for Mongolia included a closed-door meeting with President Nambaryn Enkhbayar and a visit to a traditional felt tent to see Mongolia throat singing and other cultural event"

I think he should cancel the "closed-door meeting" and continue on to the tent since it only has a flap

fermented mare's milk concoction that knocked the Medieval Europeans on their butts when they discovered it. Give some of that to Bush and see if he gets knocked even further off his game.

It's black tea with yak butter and salt. Yak butter is invariably rancid--I rather doubt there's a word for "rancid" in Tibetan--and about the consistency of soft cheese.

Mmmm-- yak butter tea.

14. Mongolia happens to know a thing or two about invading Iraq
They invaded and destroyed Baghdad in 1258:

"Hulagu Khan sacked Baghdad on (February 10, 1258), causing great loss of life. Hulagu and many others feared an earthquake or other shock to nature occurring if the blood of Al-Musta'sim, the last reigning Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad, a direct descendent of Mohammed's uncle, was spilled. Despite having taken advice from Learned Shiites that no such calamity had happened after the deaths of John the Baptist, Jesus Christ, or the Shiite saint Hosein, as a precaution Hulagu had Al-Musta'sim wrapped in a carpet and then trodden to death by horses on February 20, 1258. Al-Musta'sim family was also executed, with the exception of his youngest son and a daughter who was sent to Mongolia to be a slave in the harem of Hulagu.<1>

The Abbasids still maintained a feeble show of authority, confined to religious matters, in Egypt under the Mamluks, but the dynasty finally disappeared with Al-Mutawakkil III, who was carried away as a prisoner to Constantinople by Selim I."

So, when did the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party originate?

The MPRP was the ruling party in Mongolia from 1921 until 1996 (with no other political parties allowed until 1990) and from 2000 until 2004. The current President, Natsagiyn Bagabandi, is a member of the party. The party also holds nearly half of the seats in the State Great Hural, where it is led by former Prime Minister Nambaryn Enkhbayar, who has now become Speaker of Parliament. The party is currently in a power-sharing arrangement with the other main bloc, but does not hold the post of Prime Minister.

The party was established on March 1, 1921, and is claimed to have been the first real political party in Mongolia. It was originally known simply as the Mongolian People's Party, but added the word "Revolutionary" at a conference in 1924. The organizational structure was modeled closely on that of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, which the party followed closely.

Yes, that's right, the most popular political party in Mongolia is the communist party! Bush just dissed Mongolia's president, and the party that won more votes for the parliament than any other!

20. Bush Cheers Mongolia for Pushing Democracy
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051121/ap_on_re_as/bush_asia

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia - President Bush, buffeted by unrelenting criticism at home over Iraq, on Monday saluted Mongolia's "fearless warriors" for helping his embattled effort to establish democracy in the heart of the Middle East.

"Mongolia and the United States are standing together as brothers in the cause of freedom," Bush told Mongolian troops and lawmakers in a speech at the Government House.

After two days in China partly aimed at nudging that communist country toward greater freedoms, Bush's stop here — the first by a U.S. president — was meant to showcase the first communist country in Asia to turn toward democracy. Mongolia discarded communism 15 years ago; it holds democratic elections and allows Western-style freedoms.

"You are an example of success for the region and for the world," Bush said. "As you build a free society in the heart of Central Asia, the American people stand with you."

Bush spent about four hours in this land of vast deserts, plains and mountains on the last leg of an eight-day, four-country swing through Asia that included stops in Japan, South Korea and China. After the 13-minute speech, Bush ventured just outside the capital to sip fermented mare's milk and listen to the traditional Central Asian art of throat singing.

</snip>

I feel sick to my stomach. He is such an embarassment.

35. 173 troops.....................we paid 11 million
..........the Mongolian military has 173 soldiers of the 150th Elite Peacekeeping Battalion in Hillah, Iraq. All reports, said Myers, are that the unit is doing an excellent job as part of the Multinational Division Central- South.

The division is commanded by a Polish general and contains troops from a number of different nationalities. Myers said the Mongolian unit's members have proven themselves as infantrymen, as convoy escorts, as engineers and in providing medical assistance to the Iraqi people.

http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Jan2004/n01132004_200401132.html

............noted that Mongolia is one of 16 countries that will share $1 billion in U.S. aid as part of an incentive program for poor countries that show a commitment to economic and government reform. The president also brought a gift — $11 million in aid to improve Mongolia's military forces through a separate program for nations allied with the U.S.-led war on terror.
