Attack on Critics: RNC ad targets Reid (Runs Nationally this Weekend)
http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2005/Nov-18-Fri-2005/news/4370333.html

The Republican National Committee will begin broadcasting television ads in key markets nationally this weekend that suggest Sen. Harry Reid is "playing partisan politics" with the war in Iraq.

The 60-second ads are part of a national campaign by the RNC to push back against increasingly vocal criticism from Democrats about the Bush administration's policy in Iraq.

The ad, which RNC sources said will air in Las Vegas, provides Reid's office number and tells viewers to call the Nevada senator and "tell him to stop playing partisan politics and stand behind our troops."

On Thursday, Reid joined a growing number of Democrats to publicly condemn the administration for attacking critics of the war.

We need to counter this. Call and email Reid's office and tell Harry to keep giving the Repukes Hell!

2. What about Murtha? And Republicans questioning the war?
And the majority of the American People?

They can't run ads against everybody. Can they?

Oh, right...They're financed by the richest 5%.

And what that 5% says...goes.

6. Considering the fact that the vast majority of Americans don't agree...
...with them, I think they're just digging a deeper hole. Let them show ads to piss off Americans. I've begun to realize the Republican Party does nothing except flip off the American people and do what they want regardless of how we feel about it. I can't stand those SOBs. 2006 isn't that far away, and the backlash is growing...

8. isn't this rather unusual? strange even?
I don't remember the DNC running any ads against henry hyde during the impeachment madness, I don't remember part organizations ever getting involved in supporting a sitting president.

9. Reid can just say - I've had the mob put a bomb under my family's car
before so if the RNC thinks they can scare me into going along with Bush's terrible policies, they've got another thing coming - or something to that effect.

I hope it just pisses Harry off more so he can (figuratively) grab them around their throat and yell at them ("Are you trying to bribe me?").

I love Harry's colorful history.

Land of Hard Knocks
Long After It Gave Him Something to Escape, the Busted Boom Town of Searchlight Still Speaks To Harry Reid's Heart

By Mark Leibovich
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, July 17, 2005; D01

SEARCHLIGHT, Nev.

-snip-
Still, Reid clearly loves Searchlight, and his hard-bitten story is legitimate. The third of four brothers, Pinky Reid grew up in a wooden shack with no hot water or indoor toilet. Harry Sr. was a hard-rock miner who suffered chronic pain from on-the-job injuries. He battled alcoholism and depression, and spent time in jail. He killed himself in 1972, at 58.

The senator reflects on his childhood with an air of detachment, as if describing events from a novel. He cheerfully recalls his father pulling out his own teeth with pliers. Or the time his brother Dale had his ear sheared off by a windblown piece of tin. Or when another brother, Larry, broke his leg, which also went untreated. Reid vividly recalls the sound of Larry crying out in pain from his parents' bedroom.

Inez Reid was a redhead with few and eventually no teeth. As a teenager, Harry Reid took a job at a gas station and bought her a false set. "It changed her," Reid says of his mother's new teeth. "I mean, you can imagine how good she felt with teeth after all those years?"

-snip-
Reid hitchhiked 40 miles to attend Basic High School in Henderson. There, he met his future wife, Landra Gould, the daughter of a chiropractor who disapproved of Reid instantly. (Reid and his future father-in-law fought bitterly, including once with their fists.) Reid also met a history teacher, Mike O'Callaghan, who would go on to become the governor of Nevada. O'Callaghan coached Reid in boxing at the Henderson Boys' Club and arranged for local businessmen to pay for Reid to attend college at Southern Utah State. Reid boxed in exhibition bouts as an amateur middleweight during college, occasionally sparring with professionals. "You could knock him down but he didn't stay down," O'Callaghan said in a 2001 interview with Salon.com (he died last year). Reid boasts that he never got his nose bloodied.

Reid gave up boxing when he began law school at George Washington University, working nights as a Capitol Police officer. He returned home and was elected to the Nevada Assembly at 28. Two years later, in 1970, he became the state's youngest lieutenant governor. In 1977, O'Callaghan appointed Reid chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission, a job that pitted him frequently against the mob.

Reid vowed that he would "not play games with undesirables," shutting out reputed gangsters and closing casinos. A security guard moved into the Reid home after several telephoned death threats. The Reids covered their windows with sheets. Landra once discovered a bomb under the hood of their car, which was filled with their kids at the time. Reid then took to starting his car with a remote control device. This all has a way of putting the rough-and-tumble of a confirmation fight in perspective, Reid says.

It is embarassing to me that Virginia has elevated George Allen to the same rank as Reid. Silver spoon Allen certainally does not have the character as Reid.

Commercial accuses senator of flip-flopping on war in Iraq

By ERIN NEFF
REVIEW-JOURNAL

"Instead of giving our troops a plan for success or answering the serious questions of the American people, they've decided to start up the Rove/Cheney attack machine," Reid said Thursday on the Senate floor. "We're at war. We need a commander in chief, not a campaigner in chief. We need leadership from the White House, not more white-washing of the very serious issues confronting us in Iraq."

16. Reid should take it as a compliment, he's obviously making 'em sweat.
And agree that it's no big political deal for him if he's not up for reelection until 2010. This way, he can take some heat for those who have to run next year.

13. How about an ad showing Cheney's various "inconsistencies"?
The Daily Show had a great segment of him denying something he said about Iraq with him actually saying the thing he supposedly never said. That would make a great ad.

Since they want to roll us back to the Gilded Age, let's make sure they have to pass through the Nixon era along the way.

18. they said they were going to "campaign mode" this thing
George has been out giving speeches to support the war, the RNC is running ads bashing the critics. They are a not addressing the issue, they are trying to turn it into a campaign. Well guess what, Sen. Reid is in office for 5 more years, and the RNC is burning a lot of money defending a lost cause. That lost cause being the neo-con argument of pro war. Let them spend several million on trying to trash Sen. Reid, let them spend several million trying to keep their people loyal. While they are on defense, keep pushing the facts and keep pushing the reality of the republican stance. On the other side of this, we can push our agenda and less than half the price, with a majority approval rating. Sen. Reid with his statements is taking away the argument that Dem's don't have a plan, that they are just complaining. Give em hell Harry!

Gee. I learned in school that war is NOT a good thing. People should be critical of it.

I hope Reid fires back about the family values of people who don't believe war should be questioned.

Spreading disinformation should be expensive as hell, and while the Republican Party probably has enough money to buy their own television network... in addition to Fox News... it's good to see them blowing campaign funds a full eleven and a half months before the next election.

The fact that they have to buy the time to spread the disinformation is telling as well. Until recently, the Republicans could count on the press to do that for free.

Disinformation also has a curious effect on a disbelieving public. Once they spot the ruse, they pay extra-close attention to it, and it makes them angry, and then they do things like yell at televisions in bars, and argue it heatedly with their less-informed friends.

And that, my friends, is the sort of advertising that money cannot buy.
