Comedy of errors? A science-politics clash with a twist (Sex studies)

The National Institutes of Health this week alerted more than 150 researchers that their government-funded studies of sexual issues are under scrutiny by conservative members of Congress.

But those members, including Rep. Joseph R. Pitts (R., Pa.), actually questioned the merits of only 10 studies. Moreover, those members have distanced themselves from the authors of the longer list, a conservative lobbying group called the Traditional Values Coalition.

Although the latest collision of politics and science apparently involves a mix-up, it has set off a brouhaha, with Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D., Calif.) accusing the coalition of "scientific McCarthyism" and demanding that Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson defend the NIH.
