Small earthquake jolts Plymouth (Mass. Magnitude 2.5)
Small earthquake jolts Plymouth

By Globe Staff | November 17, 2005

A magnitude 2.5 earthquake jolted Plymouth residents this afternoon, causing no apparent damage or injuries, local emergency management officials said.

The temblor struck at about 12:40 p.m., about 2 miles south of the town's center.

It is at least the 15th earthquake to occur this year in New England, according to the Weston Observatory, a geophysical research post run by Boston College. The last, which measured 1.7 on the Richter Scale, was on Oct. 10 near Lowell.

1. Bah. . . 2.5? Call me when something actually rattles :)
I may live in Mass now, but I'm a California boy. Hell, we don't even get out of bed unless it's a 5.0 :)

9. Yeah. Large truck just drove by here in California. . .
while my phone -- set on vibrate -- went off at the same time. For a moment, I thought I was in Massachusetts and it was the big one!

I made the mistake of listening to RWLA(right wing lying a**hole) and gave an answer that might have been a bit too forceful. :)

10. A small quake to be sure, BUT
It bears watching anyway. Small quakes are often precursors to larger ones, especially along fault lines which are normally quiet. A rise in activity in this region should be considered a potentially dangerous situation.

Please remember that the northeastern US is more densely populated than the west coast, with the exception of course of the major cities there. Furthermore buildings in the east are not built to withstand earthquakes the way that buildings in LA are. Add to this the fact that seismic energy dissipates more slowly in the east in general as compared to the west, resulting in damage spread over a wider geographical area.

Not big news perhaps, but not trivial either.

14. You Golden Staters are being mean.
I hope all the Mass folks ridicule you the next time an unusual event happens where you live.
Near me, parents drag their kids to the top of Mt. Diablo to play in the snow when there's only a dusting. Do you know how pathetic those kids look trying to make snowballs or slide saucers on that?

For you Plymouth/Marshfield DUers, check out your own square on the ANSS map.

23. Earthquake History of Massachusetts
http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/states/massachusetts/massachusetts_history.html

"The early settlers compiled the extensive historical accounts that are now available. Nineteen earthquakes, intensity V or greater, have centered in Massachusetts. A number of other earthquakes were centered off the coast of Massachusetts and affected the eastern portion of the State. A shock in 1755 reached intensity VIII at Boston and was felt across the State. In addition, Massachusetts was affected by some of the more severe Canadian shocks plus the earthquake of 1929 that centered on Grand Banks of Newfoundland.

Strong earthquakes in the St. Lawrence Valley in 1638, 1661, 1663, and 1732 were felt in Massachusetts. The 1638 and 1663 shocks damaged chimneys at Plymouth, Salem, and Lynn. On June 11, 1643, Newbury, Massachusetts, was strongly shaken. Again in 1727 (November 9) an earthquake described as "tremendous" in one report and "violent" in another caused much damage at Newbury. The shock was felt from the Keenebec River to the Delaware River and from ships at sea to the extreme western settlements. Several strong aftershocks were reported from the area through February 1728.

Eastern Massachusetts was shaken moderately on February 17, 1737, and June 24, 1741. Then on June 14, 1744, large numbers of bricks were shaken from tops of chimneys at Boston and other towns and stone walls were shaken down. Many persons in Newbury and Ipswich were alarmed. The earthquake was reported felt severely at Falmouth, Maine...(more)"

the big one in the New Madrid fault.

That significant fault (that runs through Missouri, Ark., Tenn., etc.) is overdue to blow ... in 1811 and 1812, that fault registered four of the most significant earthquakes ever recorded in the U.S. Predictions are that if it has another 7 pointer in modern times (with all the additional population and development), the destruction would make anything in California look tame by comparison.

Those 1811-12 earthquakes were felt as far away as Boston.

With all his troubles, Bushie probably has people putting explosives along the New Madrid, so he can have the chance to stand on a pile of rubble with a bullhorn and be Mister Big Stuff again.

Maybe the Bushies chose Mass. for a little target practice.
