CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The former U.S. attorney for southern West Virginia said Monday that he never contributed secretly to a political campaign, insisting he did not follow through on an offer to help another prosecutor win election.
Kasey Warner, 53, abruptly left office this summer after the Justice Department began investigating e-mails in which he offered to secretly assist a GOP candidate who was eventually elected Kanawha County prosecutor, according to an audit released Sunday.
"Let me try to steer some contributions your way (gently) and perhaps use a family member with a different last name to make my contribution," Warner wrote to Bill Charnock in July 2003.
On Monday, Warner said he did not recall the e-mail but said he may have used "inartful language."
