Republican pharmacist to run for Congress in 7th District
Republican pharmacist to run for Congress in 7th District

The Associated Press - Monday, November 14, 2005
ST. PAUL

A Republican pharmacist said Monday he will challenge U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Detroit Lakes, in the 7th Congressional District.

Michael Barrett, who manages the pharmacy at Long Prairie Memorial Hospital, kicked off his campaign Monday at an event in Long Prairie.

In a news release, Barrett described himself as a conservative in the mold of Ronald Reagan. He says he wants to limit government, cut taxes and protect private property rights. He opposes abortion and supports gun rights.

Barrett also went on the attack, saying Peterson hasn't accomplished enough in Washington.

1. It's most amusing that no GOP want to run on W's programs
You have to wonder about their critical thinking skills. Most amusing.

4. This won't work
They love Colin in the 7th - heck, he's almost a republican but I'll take him any day over this loser. I wish we could run a progressive in that district but sadly it probably wouldn't go over too well - though, with emphasis on the right issues, it could work.

The Reagan-loving trend has softened over the last few years - hopefully if this goon keeps pounding it into the ground he will just disappear into the ether.

5. making government work effectively is what
will create more dem voters in areas like yours -- i'm originally from peoria -- and it seems to me that what people want is bang for their buck.

medicare, schools, whatever it s -- if people see effective results for those tax dollars then their will be less resistance to money spent.

the incompetance of bushco creates both an opportunity and a trap of course -- but one dems can exploit in 06 and 08.

make government work.

A wonderful "selling point" if this is true. I'm sure someone will ask him.

8. It's a very short piece. Here's the other paragraph:
Peterson, a farmer and former state senator, has represented the district for 15 years and is the ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee.

I'd like to hear more about his right-wing pharmacist's views, too.
The chances he just buckles down and does his damned job without interjecting his looneytoon views as the controlling element are pretty slim, it would seem.

10. Live in the 7th
People love Peterson, he actually is much like the people of the area. I think even the people here (north end of this heavily Republican district) are getting tired of republicans. Tim Pawlenty isn't talked about very favorably anymore, and people are becoming more and more outspoken about Bush. Winter is moving in fast and people are very worried about heating bills. I suspect republicans will be even less popular in the spring. The energy programs to help with heating bills do not seem to be available yet this year, we are all worried about seniors and those on limited incomes.

11. Peterson had better keep on his toes re Barrett.

Here's a link to his web site. He has his talking points all lined up. He's fighting kind of...shall I just say...dirty. In other words, it looks like he's lying about Peterson.

http://www.barrettforcongress06.com/

Here's what he has to say about Peterson. I think he is hitting issues these clueless Republicans will be. I'm hearing much the same in Colorado about immigration. We need to get ahead of this. These idiots have the bits between their teeth and are off running toward a cliff. God knows who will follow them. And the part about not wanting to cut the budget to help Katrina victims....oh, please. We need to take heating fuel assistance and food stamps and away from struggling families to do what...? :eyes:

http://www.barrettforcongress06.com/news.html

“We don’t just need someone who will work hard for the District,” said Barrett, “what we really need is someone who will also get results. I am just that person.” He went on to describe how ineffective the current Congressman has been, and pointed out that the only piece of legislation he could find that Peterson had passed in 15 years was a very minor bill to prevent the interstate transportation of chickens for cockfighting. “I can’t promise you how many terms I will serve in Congress,” Barrett said, “but one thing I will promise you is that when I leave, I will have more than just chickens on my resume”. Barrett went on to explain that “like it or not, the truth is that you have to be in the majority Republican caucus in order to have any real effect on legislation. Even with his new minority position, Collin is still nothing more than a voice from the wilderness”. He further stated, “as a freshman Republican, I will immediately have more clout in the next Congress than an eight term Democrat. Unlike Collin, I will not just complain. I will offer real solutions instead”.

Barrett also expressed his concern over the ‘upbraiding’ that Peterson suffered at the hands of the House Democratic Caucus earlier this year, and the subsequent deal that Peterson was forced to make with them to get his leadership position. “Before they would give him the ‘ranking’ minority position on the Ag Committee, he had to promise to vote the Democrat party line more. The direct result of this is that he no longer votes with the Seventh District”. “Collin hasn’t changed Washington in eight terms,” said Barrett, “and now we see that Washington has changed Collin”. Barrett went on to describe how Peterson, in 2005, has voted twice against Homeland Security, voted four times against Small Business, and voted against cheaper fuel for farmers this year at harvest time. He also showed how Peterson voted against faith-based hiring and more accountability in education and has talked about fiscal restraint but is now poised with all the other House Democrats to vote against cutting the federal budget to help with Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. “Representative Peterson always talks as a fiscal conservative, but he usually votes the other way when he thinks nobody is paying attention” said Barrett, “but the National Taxpayers Union rankings for the last five years clearly show Collin to be a big spender”. In closing he said, “The major difference between Collin and myself is that I will always be a person who will represent the best interests of the people of my District first, and I would never consider selling them out just for a leadership position. I am a person of principles, and I will always stand by them”.

13. I know I shouldn't do it
Link to hateful websites and all ... but, well, I was looking around to see whether this Barrett guy has formalized his stuff by hooking up with, wait for it, Pharmacists for Life International (presided over by Karen Brauer herself, whom anyone who ever visited the little hatefests at that rightgrrls place knows as the "Hoosier Pharmer", and who was the one who started the whole shitfight by getting herself fired from KMart). Couldn't find any connection, but I just can't resist this:

http://www.pfli.org/main.php?pfli=stupid

This is what apparently passes for "hate mail" at that place.

This hipster is just to smooth to not include. The Leno-like jabs would be amusing if they weren't so despondent-inducing. We'll give her an "E" for effort, but a "C" for confused

Dear Mrs. Brauer,

Thank you for taking a stand on behalf of pharmacists who refuse to dispense medicine. I wish we all respected the rights of pharmacists more. I don't think it's fair to force people to serve their country in a way that's against their morals. They should be allowed to register as Conscientious Objectors, and the Pharmacy Draft Boards should be considerate of that if their number gets called. There should be some kind of other community service the Board assigns to them if they have documented reasons why they can't perform the job.

Pharmacists who don't feel they can do the job should be allowed to quit, without retribution. It's not right to force someone into a job against their will, and then if they refuse to perform the mission, we court martial them and toss them in jail.

I am thinking of trying to start up something like an underground railroad, to help the pharmacists who oppose medicine escape to another country, or even just hide in our attics - whatever it takes to help these victims. We'd need a way they could easily identify the safe houses to flee to - maybe we could put signs in our windows, something like a railroad sign - with the two RR's, but each R could have the little x at the bottom.

I hope that someday in the near future this health care crisis will end, and we will be able to have an all volunteer force.

Audrey in Michigan

p.s. I saw your slogan, "Pharmacists for Life" and was thinking you could get a little more punch in your campaign if you went with something catchier. What do you think of something like: "Protection is for Everyone! (Unless You're a Slut)" - do you think it's too long for a bumpersticker?
Pretty damned funny, I thought!

But then, the thick of skull aren't known for grasping analogies, or getting the joke.
