President's ratings hit new low in poll

WASHINGTON — Americans' views of President Bush and his trustworthiness have hit new lows, a downturn that could make it more difficult for him to push his legislative agenda and to boost Republican candidates in next year's congressional elections.

Fewer than one in 10 adults say they would prefer a congressional candidate who is a Republican and who agrees with Bush on most major issues, according to a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll taken Friday through Sunday. Even among Republicans, seven of 10 are most likely to back a candidate who has at least some disagreements with the president.

Bush's job approval rating sank to a record low 37%. The poll finds growing criticism of the president, unease about the nation's direction and opposition to the Iraq war.

"All of this is a culmination: How we ended up going into Iraq, gasoline prices, the underlying economic jitters, the sense that the president is out of touch with what the average person wants," Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio says. "What good news have people heard?"

"taken Friday through Sunday"... this is after last Friday's "counter attack against Dems" speech.

5. Still - it will not necessarily add up to votes
Elections for congress are often local and the GOP has a nasty lock on many places (thanks to redistricting). Incumbency is powerful.
Still - these are getting to where they should be <approval by the 9.3% of American voters too blinded by self -interest (i.e.greed and criminality)ignorance, bigotry and clogged eyeballs to see the fool for what he is - the naked emperor-wannabe.>

10. But it breaks the GOP leadership.
They followed these monsters without blinking or thinking. Now it looks to be straight over a cliff. These numbers reflect RAGE. Rage translates to THROW THE BUMS OUT.

This is a very important time for ANY Republican with leadership ambitions, because Frist, DeLay, and Hastert have insisted on blind obedience and the results suck.

Is it the Ides of March yet?

33. Howard Fineman on Keith Olbermann just said tonight that Bush is
still failing throughout country and Bushe has never governed with Rove by finding common ground. Fineman gave Bush advice to stop fighting all his opponents and start working with them to figure out how to end war and get out.

This segment came after some footage of Bush with Laura in cold, cold Alaska. I guess * might have to move out there b/c no one in lower 48 will want him. Maybe a grizzly will do him in. Chuckle.

Bush is the first president to have NO common ground with any rational, thinking people.

He is 100% pure crony capitalism and theocracy.

31. Why do Republican approval ratings only tank in OFF ELECTION years?
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 08:30 PM by TwentyFive
Does the Republican spin machine scare enough voters to make bad poll numbers dissappear?

2006 will be the same old scare issues:
>Moral values
>Teenage abortion
>Gays recruit children
>Democrats enemy of normal Americans
>Swift boat liars
>9/11
>Democrats hate god
>Defend America
>Illegals take jobs
>Democrats ban guns
>Terrorists
>Tax increases
>etc, etc, etc,

And of course, the stupid corporate media will go along with the phony campaign of phony scare issues.

20. I think we're all getting ready to misunderestimate somebody
Bush has had about four solid days of denying he lied to take us to war. His explanation (the Democrats believed Saddam was dangerous too, and now they're just playing politics) is impossible to refute.

But we can all ask Mr. Bush a question: If you believed Iraq was so dangerous, why didn't you send enough troops at the beginning to win the war?

Did Congressional and Senate Democrats see all the raw intelligence provided to the White House and the CIA assessments that these WMD claims were suspect or just what the Chimp allowed them to see?

I'm thinking no.

Let's see his poll numbers continure to dive. He's a typhoid dubbya already.

40. Logical thought = misunderestimation
Congress is always an easy mark for a wounded president to attack. First, you accuse congressmen of being political. Next he'll say, "of course I withheld intelligence from them, they're too political." Then he'll say they had everything they needed to make a decision, he made darn sure of that.

It doesn't matter that the answers contradict each other. That's exactly how Bush always operates, by arguing contradictory points. The rules of logic don't apply. And those who think logically always misunderestimate him.

42. It may still be astounding next fall.....
Here's why I believe Bush cannot dig himself out of the pit he's in -

1) Gas prices are not expected to go down much more. It's true that gas prices are looking better now, but the damage has been done. And home heating oil is still exorbitant. Plus, I just read that one of the major oil fields in Kuwait is expected to run out.

2) The war in Iraq is not going to improve. Bush has already assured us that he's "staying the course" no matter what. So we'll be stuck in the Quagmire, and people will be furious by next fall.

This is the main reason for Bush's poor performance in the polls. I was surprised: I thought people always let domestic issues be the dominant factor. But in this case, it's the Iraq war that's leading the unhappiness.

19. Friday's CBS Evening News
CBS went after asshole with both barrels on Friday night. My jaw was hanging somewhere around my chest. First, they showed parts of his speech and called it an attack. Then, the tore up his assertion that Congress had the same intelligence he did in 2002. They even quoted Powell's chief of staff. It went on from there. Sorry I don't remember all the details any longer.

I imagine they'll report these poll numbers tonight. Should be interesting.

our lack of subpeona powers, practically zero support from the MSM as well as being the minority party in legislatures throughout the country has somehow given us the uncanny ability to bring down GWB.

nope, you did this all on your own George, start blaming your chief politcal adviser Karl Rove the genius who total you to spend half of your polical capital on crushing social security. That was a big winner

26. As long as the dimwit in chief........
continues his laissez faire stance on his administration's involvement in the Valerie Plame affair and their manipulation of intelligence leading up to the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq, his numbers will continue to fall.
The smartest minds in the Conservative movement (I know, that isn't too smart) advised that bush take his lumps, clean house from top to bottom and admit to their mistakes and manipulation regarding Iraq. Bush, ever the hot tempered, mule-headed and "loyal" idiot he is, decided, either on his own or on the advice of his underlings, to do the only thing they had ever done; attack.
Each day bush attacks the "naysayers" and the Democrats that he now says are aiding and abetting the enemy with their charges that he and his merry gang of thugs manipulated intelligence. Attack, attack, attack. That's all these people know, playing nice has never entered their minds. It's a win at all costs, scorched earth policy that has worked well for them over the years. There comes a time though when the truth catches up with you, when the facts are so overwhelmingly against you that you either abandon your policies or you stick with them to the bitter end and let them consume you. The latter is what the bush cabal has chosen to do. They intend to hurl insults, slurs and lies to the very end. The only problem is, no one is buying them anymore. The truth is out there, naked as a newborn baby and cannot be denied, dismissed or distracted from. The jig is up for these guys, they know it and are going to go out swinging. This is what scares me. What are they capable of in their quest to maintain their grip on power.
The Nixon administration took much the same tack. We all know how that ended and I see startling similarities between the two. I guess these guys just aren't as smart as we gave them credit for. They started to believe their own hype and bullshit and now have nowhere to turn. They've painted themselves into a corner.
We can expect more of the same over the next few months, but somewhere, somehow soon the damn is going to burst. I'm scared to even think about who or what is going to be in the way when that damn does burst. These men are evil and are capable of anything.
