Pelosi: House Must Vote Today to Oppose Torture

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the need for the House to go on record strongly opposing use of torture of detainees:

"President Bush declared yesterday in Panama that 'we do not torture.' In light of the President's declaration, the House must go on record today in support of writing into law the policy the President has now endorsed.

"I call upon Speaker Hastert to appoint House conferees to the defense appropriations bill without further delay so that Congressman John Murtha can offer his motion demonstrating the House's strong opposition to torture of detainees.

"The American people know that torture is inconsistent with our values. We must make certain that our laws reflect those values."

3. Good job, Pelosi. Smart.
Get those little jerkoffs in a corner and use dimwit's own words against him/them.

I know the Democrats have been semi-dormant for a long time, and I'm one of their leading in-house critics. But it really is beginning to feel like they're waking up and addressing some of this egregious crap.

And someone let me know if you have a different take, but my impression is that when it comes to parliamentary maneuvering, the GOP is freaking clueless. We have Byrd, sure, and he's in a class by himself. But the rest of the Democrats, on the whole, still seem a hell of a lot better with the nuance of parliamentary rules than the boneheads of the Embezzlement-'N-Death Party.

I will, however, give Bill Frist the coveted "Most whiny SOB on Capitol Hill" award. As an aside, does anyone else think Frist's close pals are planning a knife in the back for him one of these days soon? He doesn't seem very effective.

4. Now if she can only bring herself to really oppose the war...
Pelosi might have some redeeming quality.

Yet all she does is push this foolish measure calling on Bush (!) to create a plan to exit Iraq. She opposes all efforts of Congress to put any deadline on the withdrawal of troops.

Frankly, given her support for the worse policies of Israel, including assassinations (which also are in violation of Geneva Convention, i have no confidence her stated opposition to torture is anymore than lip-service, and political opportunism.
