Peruvians push for Chile to hand over Fujimori

Senior Peruvian officials travelled to Santiago yesterday to press Chile to extradite Alberto Fujimori, the exiled former president who turned up unexpectedly in Chile on Sunday, vowing to return to Peru and run again for the presidency.

Peru sent Romulo Pizarro, the minister of interior, and Antonio Maldonado, the anti-corruption prosecutor, to its neighbour after Chilean authorities arrested Mr Fujimori in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A Fujimori aide in Lima said he had spoken to the former president. "He knew this was going to happen," said the aide. "This is part of his strategy. It's like a chess game - this is one of his moves. He's comfortable, calm and confident that the Chileans won't extradite him."

Mr Fujimori, president from 1990 to 2000, when he famously resigned by fax, is wanted in Peru on 21 charges, including sanctioning the 1991 massacre of 15 people in Barrios Altos, a poor neighbourhood of Lima, and the abduction and murder of nine students and a professor from La Cantuta university in 1992.

4. both I think, here's a BBC article: Peru-Chile border row escalates
President Alejandro Toledo of Peru has signed a law that redraws the sea border with Chile, deepening a row between the two Latin American nations.
The bill, approved by Congress unanimously on Thursday, grants Peru 37,900 sq km (14,600 sq miles) of fishing waters in the Pacific Ocean.

Chile currently controls the area, and says the law violates treaties signed in the 1950s.

It has launched a diplomatic campaign against the move.

Chilean judge denies provisional freedom for former Peru president

SANTIAGO, Chile – Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori on Tuesday lost a bid to be released from jail while he fights extradition to Peru to face charges of corruption and human rights abuses during his decade-long regime.
Justice Orlando Alvarez said Fujimori, who is being held at an academy for corrections officers, must remain under arrest as Peru pursues his extradition on 21 corruption and human rights charges.

Fujimori, 67, was arrested at his Santiago hotel early Monday, hours after his surprise arrival from Japan, where he had remained in a protected exile for five years after resigning the Peruvian presidency amid a corruption scandal.

Fujimori fled to Japan in November 2000 as his 10-year autocratic government crumbled. He faces 21 charges ranging from abuse of power and corruption to sanctioning a paramilitary death squad accused of two massacres of suspected rebel collaborators in which 25 people were killed, including an 8-year-old boy.

6. This is good news. Fujimori has proven to be a flight risk in the
past and hopefully he will be brought to justice and tried for his crimes.
