Iran to present Mideast 'peace plan' (between Isreal and the Palestinians)
Edited on Mon Nov-07-05 09:17 PM by ECH1969
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki declared Monday that his government was planning to propose to the United Nations a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to Mottaki, the proposal was to be based on the ideas of Iran's spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameini.

Mottaki's statement followed the cancellation of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's planned trip to Iran. Annan cited the "ongoing controversy" over Ahmadinejad's remarks last week as his reason for cancellation; however, Iran's official news agency reported that Iran itself requested that Annan postpone his trip.

3. ‘Iran committed to stable Iraq and Afgahnistan’
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki here on Monday said no country can seek security only for itself without taking into account regional and international conditions.

Addressing the 13th International Conference on Central Asia and the Caucasus, he added that today, national security has broad implications and is closely linked with regional security.

“The unique geopolitical position of Iran and its location as a bridge between different regions compels us to take greater interest in the developments besetting various regions in our periphery and lay a positive role for the sake of peace, stability and security of the region.”

Referring to positive role by the Islamic Republic in bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan and Iraq, Mottaki said Iran’s strategic policy is to secure and promote peace and security in the two countries.

4. This should be good.
(Oh, I'm sorry, did my cynicism just say something?)

"Khameini said last week that the solution to the conflict involved, "a national referendum in which all true Palestinians would participate, whether they are Muslims, Jews or Christians, including Palestinian refugees throughout the world," on how to solve the Israeli-Palestinian dispute."

Hmmm ... I'm thinking the important technical term here is "true Palestinian". I could be wrong, of course.

6. he could be on to something about a vote for all Palestinians...
He may be trying to lay groundwork for large scale resettlement. Iran is playing a dangerous game, but they just might want a peaceful resolution, to the extent that they get some credit, their primary goal of being a leading regional power would be assured. And ultimately they could reduce their security concerns and spend their money and efforts making Iran an ever better place to live. It's just possible they want to take the high road, I hope so.

5. White and black South Africans finally agreed to something like peace
It is within the realm of the possible, although all sorts of people prefer to believe otherwise. There are many on both sides for whom peace would be a disaster.
