Calif. GOP Seeks Religious Push (churches campaigning for Arnold)
Republicans promoting Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's four ballot initiatives on Tuesday's special election are hoping a push by religious conservatives to promote the abortion measure could translate into support for the governor's "year of reform" agenda.

"We've had tremendous encouragement in recent weeks. Thirty churches a day are signing up to have bulletin inserts to get out the vote and remind their congregations to vote," said Gary Marx, a consultant hired by the California Republican Party to help pass Proposition 73.

"We're focusing our efforts on churches that can have the most impact, a lot of the megachurches," he said.

Arnold continues to move to the right and the GOP continues to use churches to divide Americans.

5. There is nothing "genuine" about Arnold Schwarzeneggar
I remember when a struggling Howard Dean cited "Job___" as his favorite biblical passage. I felt pretty sad for the candidate, because biblical recitations certainly were not his passion; he just felt forced to "act" religious.

Well now, pathetic republicans are using their church network to push Arnold. Arnold has nothing to offer the pius, and they know it. The gops are just pulling a desparation move.

There is nothing "genuine" about the California republicans.

11. They are trying to flip CA. I don't think they care much about
the Grope. And, now they can say again "it was the values vote" when our new Rethug secretary of state pushes the machines on us and somehow Replicants start winning elections.

CA will be the new Ohio.

3. when do these churches lose their tax exempt status?
The neocons know that the separation between church and state is real and they have been doing the level best to blur that fact now for 30 years.

8. 'religious conservatives'... and 'megachruches'
Edited on Sun Nov-06-05 07:08 AM by ixion
The phrase 'religious conservative' is a violation of chruch and state.

And megachruches... seems to be a nothing more than a repug hive. Can't people bring lawsuits against these places when they get political to have there tax exempt status revoked? It seems like a civil suite would be possible.

Hell, let the CA democratic party and the nurses and teachers union start it now.

Make moving politics into church an anethema well before the 2006 elections.

In fact, nationally, we need to start now....

13. This is how they take over. . .
they look for lower turnout, capitalize on mass politics within the cults, and then start to impose their Taliban authority. If Americans continue to be complacent about this, we'll have no one to blame for the wingnuts imposing religious "law" but ourselves.

15. Do the churches know the GOP really thinks they are wackos?
"The wackos get their information through the Christian right, Christian radio, mail, the internet and telephone trees," Scanlon wrote in the memo, which was read into the public record at a hearing of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. "Simply put, we want to bring out the wackos to vote against something and make sure the rest of the public lets the whole thing slip past them."

24. Won't work this time.
The churches don't like Ahnuld. A. He is not American born (big strike against him in the religious fundie circles), B. He has an accent (see point A.), C. He's not used the typical fundie catch phrases, attended the prayer breakfasts, promoted the fundie agenda enough for them to trust him.

IMO, this is a waste of time.

He's not an actor, people. This is not like Ronald Raygun. He's a friggin' weighlifter, OK? A no-neck sitting-on-his-brain imported musclehead, who belives, as I think much of this country does, that he's a military special agent.

36. Say what?
Some church in California is being threatened with loss of its tax-exempt status because the pastor criticized the administration, and yet it's okay to campaign for that rutting beast? Has the country gone mad, or is hypocrisy just coming out of the closet?

By the way, a church I visited in Pennsylvania more or less endorsed Bush in its bulletin last fall (my regular church adheres to the stance that it does not advocate for or against any single candidate). Do I rat on St. Peter's in Scranton?

its tax exempt status for playing "politics". Obviously if you're playing on Bush's team, the politics game is okay. And the uptight religious right sees nothing wrong with this transparent dishonesty?
