Guantanamo doctor: 23 detainees on hunger strike given feeding tubes

(CNN) -- A doctor at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba said 23 detainees who are on a hunger strike have been given feeding tubes to prevent their deaths, and denied they are protesting their treatment at the U.S. military facility.

The doctor spoke to CNN on the condition his name would not be released, fearing reprisals from prisoners.

"They are malnourished because they have hunger-struck for a significant amount of time," the doctor said. "At one point in each of these individuals we did intervene to prevent the unnecessary loss of life." Since Aug. 8, the number of detainees refusing food has slowly increased from several dozen to about 128, nearly a quarter of the prison's population, according to Pentagon statistics.

The doctor said the reason the strikers are refusing food is to protest their detention. (Posted 2:58 p.m.)

Asked about the motivation of the hunger strikers, Rumsfeld said, "Well, I suppose that what they're trying to do is to capture press attention, obviously, and they've succeeded."

He added, "There are a number of people who go on a diet where they don't eat for a period and then go off of it at some point. And then they rotate and other people do that."
