US should consult allies on Iraq plans - Kissinger

BRUSSELS, Nov 4 (Reuters) - The United States should consult internationally on its plans for Iraq given the potentially devastating consequences of a failure in its policies there, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said on Friday.

Speaking at a NATO event in Brussels, Kissinger warned against the emergence of "a Jihadist government" in Baghdad, saying it would threaten security far beyond Iraq and the Middle East.

"A catastrophic outcome in Iraq would affect directly or indirectly all members of the (NATO) alliance as well as countries from South East Asia to the northern hemisphere," Kissinger told an audience of NATO officials and soldiers.

"That is why the next phase of Iraq policy in my view requires some degree of intensive consultation about its direction," he said.

Speaking of Phase's - right now we are focused on Phase 2 of the Intelligence Committee Report.

PS Thanks again for doing more thinking for us.

In the meantime why don't you retire to your quiet place while you wait for us to get back to you.

The Thirty-Year Itch

Three decades ago, in the throes of the energy crisis, Washington's hawks conceived of a strategy for US control of the Persian Gulf's oil. Now, with the same strategists firmly in control of the White House, the Bush administration is playing out their script for global dominance.

Oil and Arms: An In-Depth Look

If you were to spin the globe and look for real estate critical to building an American empire, your first stop would have to be the Persian Gulf. The desert sands of this region hold two of every three barrels of oil in the world -- Iraq's reserves alone are equal, by some estimates, to those of Russia, the United States, China, and Mexico combined. For the past 30 years, the Gulf has been in the crosshairs of an influential group of Washington foreign-policy strategists, who believe that in order to ensure its global dominance, the United States must seize control of the region and its oil. Born during the energy crisis of the 1970s and refined since then by a generation of policymakers, this approach is finding its boldest expression yet in the Bush administration -- which, with its plan to invade Iraq and install a regime beholden to Washington, has moved closer than any of its predecessors to transforming the Gulf into an American protectorate.

<snip>

Ever since the oil shocks of the 1970s, the United States has steadily been accumulating military muscle in the Gulf by building bases, selling weaponry, and forging military partnerships. Now, it is poised to consolidate its might in a place that will be a fulcrum of the world's balance of power for decades to come. At a stroke, by taking control of Iraq, the Bush administration can solidify a long-running strategic design. "It's the Kissinger plan," says James Akins, a former U.S. diplomat. "I thought it had been killed, but it's back." <more>

7. where were you, KissofDeath, when BushCo was ramping up for war?
Edited on Fri Nov-04-05 02:37 PM by wordpix
Warning him that getting rid of Saddam would lead to a power vacuum that would possibly be filled by jihadists? Advising him to "intensively consult" with NATO and the UN instead of insisting the US go it essentially alone?

Retire in Peace on your Litchfield County estate in northwest CT, KissofDeath. You were bad then (Vietnam era) as now.

14. IOW: Somehow convince NATO to take this turkey off our hands.
He's apparently agrees with BushCo's view of the stakes,
and he apparently supports the goals of the war.
He just wants increased NATO involvement in the cluster f**k.

Edited on Fri Nov-04-05 09:07 PM by IndianaGreen
After all, the prowar crowd had plenty of warnings from the Left on the consequences of attacking Iraq.

The chickens are coming home to roost, and I don't care if Bush fails in Iraq! I want the troops home now, immediately and unconditionally.
