Honduran Congressional Candidate Shot to Death

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) - A 27-year-old congressional candidate has been shot to death by an unidentified gunman in the Honduran capital, authorities said Friday.

Guillermo Mejia, 27, an attorney by trade and congressional candidate for a small opposition party, was gunned down on Wednesday evening while walking with two clients through the Miraflores neighborhood of Tegucigalpa, police said. No arrests had been made.

"A stranger approached the three men and opened fire at close range against Mejia," said Anibal Baca, a representative for the national police. "He was killed for reasons that still have not been determined."

Mejia had been running for office in Nov. 27 elections for the leftist Innovation Party, which currently controls three seats in Honduras' 128-member Congress.
