LAT: Anti-Bush Protest Forces Street Closures in West L.A.
Anti-Bush Protest Forces Street Closures in West L.A.
From a Times Staff Writer

Demonstrations have required the closure of many streets around the Federal Building in Westwood this afternoon and evening, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The demonstrations are being sponsored by The World Can't Wait, a group encouraging nationwide protests today against the Bush administration.

Veteran Avenue will be closed between Wilshire Boulevard and Ohio Avenue from noon to 10:30 p.m.

From 6 to 9:30 this evening, the LAPD said the following streets will be closed:

Wilshire Boulevard between Sepulveda and Westwood boulevards.

Westwood between Wilshire Boulevard and LeConte Avenue....

3. It was
but not enough. AAR ran ads. But the publicity was weak. This is a good showing given that.

4. CBS: Anti-Bush Protests Mark Reelection {WORLD CAN'T WAIT}
Anti-Bush Protests Mark Reelection

The 22nd Amendment ensures that a new commander in chief will be sworn in on Jan. 20, 2009. But some Americans aren't willing to wait that long.

To mark the one-year anniversary of President Bush's reelection Wednesday, a group called The World Can't Wait staged rallies at sites across the United States, calling for radical change in Washington.

"We seek to create a political situation where the Bush administration's program is repudiated, where Bush himself is driven from office, and where the whole direction he has been taking U.S. society is reversed," the group, which formed last summer, said in its mission statement.

The rallies came at a time at which the Bush administration may be at its weakest point since it assumed power in 2001. The government's response to Hurricane Katrina and the rising death toll in Iraq, and the indictments of the top House Republican and a senior administration official have further emboldened the opposition. According to a CBS News poll conducted this week, Mr. Bush's job approval rating is now 35 percent, the lowest number of his presidency. Organizers of Wednesday's rallies hoped to utilize this rocky time for the Republican establishment to tap into public discontent and generate steam for their movement.

22. i replied to someone's post in the activist forum, i believe.
I probably had 3-6 topics since the beginning of September about it. It's okay though, I know it gets really hectic in GD, and hard to keep up with everything that is posted. With all the Katrina, Indictments, Poll numbers, it kind of just sunk to the bottom.

23. How great that it is on CBS
I haven't seen the network news and couldn't tell if that was the local, but since it spoke of New York, it sounded as though it was national. If so, well, Yippee Skippee.

... but the event will be turned into a trafic nightmare downtown to create anger against the protestors.

The police always try to compound any problem so they can say the protesters are the enemy.

28. It's not downtown, but Westwood. But yep, they did this to piss off
the drivers and build up resentment of the protestors. It's obvious.

26. Here are pics and a report from our local protest

For those who don't know Los Angeles, Wilshire Blvd is one pf LA's most important streets - running from downtown to the beach - about 15 miles. It bisects Beverly Hills as well. At noon today there were 8 protests on Wilshire before converging on the Federal Building in West L.A.

I could not go to the protest at the Federal Building, but I did protest at Wilshire and Fairfax from about 12:30 to 2:30. It was great to see the large number of students there. I would estimate that close to half of the crowd consisted oh high school students.

I heard on the news that several high schools went on 'lock down' to prevent students from leaving.

Here is a report from someone else who went.

27. They shut MAJOR streets?? They never do that for protests........
IMHO they did this for ONE REASON: so drivers would never SEE the protestors, and media would have trouble getting close. It's a way of keeping them less visible.

Wilshire is NEVER shut down for protests at the federal bldg. It snarls local surface traffic WAY too badly to ever justify it.

29. They have, on occasion. I attended one at the Federal Building that
was quite large, during the run-up to the war. Police blocked Wilshire off from Veteran Avenue to Sawtelle - one very long block that connects the western part of West L.A. and Brentwood with Westwood and UCLA et al. They blocked the street off in both directions (it's a divided highway there) because we were going to have a march from the eastern end of the blocked area to the western end, and stage a die-in there. Everything was peaceful.

32. BWAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHA!!
"So watch out, these people are gaining acceptance little by little, just like they did in Russia. And when these few take control, then they'll have their wish of banning private ownership of firearms, having only those who think "correctly" vote on issues and candidates, and have public ownership of corporations. How convenient for them!"

I've been hearing horseshit like that for FORTY YEARS.

I used to be a backer of "conservatives" and "republicans". I worried (oh dear!) about "creeping socialism". Just about anyone who disrupts the established order--the ironclad rule of KNOW YOUR PLACE--in this country, gets accused of being "communist".

For my entire life, I have been told that communism and socialism are horrible and bad. The truth: communism and socialism are theories of government. Period.

Well, now I've had many years to see just what our "non-communist" and "non-socialist" system can do for a person. Let's see, lately it has given me a "president" who planned a war behind closed doors, lied to all of us to make us terrified of a man whom we needn't have feared, and as the piece de resistance, Our Government may soon come and take my children, to whom I've devoted my life, and forcibly send them to FUCKING DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH IN A SHITHOLE CALLED IRAQ.

And now somebody finally got organized enough to actually break through the wall of silence, and scream loud enough for the FUCKING CRIMINALS OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION, AND THE CRIMINAL REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS, to hear the dissent, and some

LOSER like YOU comes here and tells me, "Look out! Communists are coming for your guns!!!!!!!!!"

FUCK YOU.
