BEIJING (Reuters) - Stopovers in the United States by Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian could send negative ripples through Sino-U.S. ties and increase tension between Beijing and Taipei, China said on Wednesday.

"If Chen Shui-bian engages in inappropriate activities during his stopovers in the United States...it would directly affect overall Sino-U.S. relations and would create tension in cross strait ties," Zhang Mingqing, spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, told reporters.

The United States granted Chen permission to stop in New York and Anchorage, Alaska, en route to and from Panama for celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal.

Zhang said any "official" or "political" activities would be considered inappropriate, but he did not elaborate.
