Gallup: Alito's Ratings Similar To Miers', Lower Than Roberts
Majority says Supreme Court nominee should be rejected if opposed to Roe v. Wade

Gallup News Service 11/2

PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans greet the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court with about the same degree of enthusiasm they had for Harriet Miers, but less than they had for John Roberts.

- The public is evenly divided as to whether Alito probably would or would not vote to overturn Rove v. Wade. Thirty-eight percent believe he would, and an equal percent think he would not.

- If it becomes clear Alito would vote to reverse Roe v. Wade, Americans would not want the Senate to confirm him, by 53% to 37%.

The irony here is that by their dependence upon the fundies the GOP is wedded to a group whose signature issue and most fervent wish, should it ever become law, would spell their political destruction.

1. Yeah, but will Congress listen?
They don't listen to PEOPLE. They only listen to CORPORATIONS who want us women to pop out poor children as future cannon fodder or slave laborers.

2. So long as we have the public on our side, we can filibuster until they
give in. The public will not support them changing the rules.

3. Alito is strongly linked to bush, and bush is more and more unpopular.
Honestly, if you eat at a restaurant and get food poisoning and finally decide it's because they're sloppy and cover up their mistakes, do you care what choices they offer you in the future? Nope.

bush is painted into a corner. Whatever he touches is tainted. Very few trust him anymore. We never did, but a lot of the so-called conservatives are learning the same lesson.

4. Miers was a win-win situation for us
Maybe this guy is too. Although I have to admit he appears to be competent. But the idea of another idiot in the Scalia/Thomas mold is too much to risk. I am pretty sure there is going to be evidence that he would vote down Roe v Wade, and if that evidence appears, it will be fun watching the Rethugs decide whether they want to fight to the death for someone who would cause a landslide victory for Dems in 06 and 08.

5. OK, now the Democrats don't have to fear public rejection
if they do choose to filibuster.

They also need to highlight his opposition to the FMLA. That's an even bigger deal, IMO. We, as a country, are much nearer a consensus on that than on abortion.
