Rumsfeld says Gitmo hunger strike is "some people going on a diet"
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 12:08 AM by IChing
snip>..

Asked about the motivation of the hunger strikers, Rumsfeld said: "Well, I suppose that what they're trying to do is to capture press attention, obviously, and they've succeeded.

"There are a number of people who go on a diet where they don't eat for a period and then go off of it at some point. And then they rotate and other people do that,""
he added.

US District Court Judge Gladys Kessler last week ordered the government to provide medical records on Guantanamo prisoners who are being force-fed and to notify their lawyers about forced feedings.

The judge said detainees' lawyers had presented "deeply troubling" allegations of US personnel violently shoving feeding tubes as thick as a finger through the men's noses and into their stomachs without anaesthesia or sedatives, with detainees vomiting blood as US personnel mocked them. snip

7. There's not any significant difference between Rumsfeld and Fred Phelps
They both are idiots, they both think highly of themselves, and they both relish the thought of causing others pain.

By the way, did any DU'ers ever see a photo of the young Colin Powell? I just found this one:

Here's what happened to him after the Bush administration got finished with him. It's not a GOOD change....

15. Powell was never "changed"
He has always been a sold-out yes-man who lied and covered up for his superiors going all the way back to his Nam days when he was involved in suppressing reports of atrocities such as in Mi Lai.

And after he got a little boo-boo on his footie and got his ass outta Nam in a hurry, he's had the same modus operandi ever since. The rest was all just a facade.

8. Clueless or sadistic?
A diet and a hunger strike aren't even in the same universe of comparisons and yet he just pops out with that remark which insults the intelligence of every American in whose name these "diets" are being forcibly thwarted. Could he possibly think that these men who are without hope of knowing how long they will live in a cage are trying to lose a few pounds and get in shape?

He probablt thinks Gandhi went on a diet too (if he even knows anything about him). Same with Bobby Sands.

He is the face and spokesman for our nation's military response to terrorism and America sounds inhumane, barbaric and ugly.

11. the man is obviously deranged. he's making our country look like callous
freaks. there are innocent boys and men in guantanamo bay... we all know it. there are also varying degrees of the guilty. rumsfeldt, on the other hand, is playing the satan character... cold, cruel, callous, heartless... this makes us all look horrible.

look, would it just be way too much for someone in the administration to fly down there, talk to the nose hose guys and get them to stop being torturers, and then announce that they've taken care of it with a nice compassionate tone? DO WE REALLY NEED TO LOOK LIKE TORTURING ASSHOLES SO BUSH CAN WIN HIS WAR ON TERRAH IN HIS MIND?

13. Rumsfailed is a War Criminal.
He belongs in prison.

Oh, here he is in one.

Rumsfailed Admitted to Violating Geneva Convention

Rumsfailed admitted in public on TV that when CIA Director Tenet requested that an Iraqi prisoner be sent to a secret Afghan/US Prison that Rumsfailed did so. After four months a DOD Attorney stated that this was an illegal act. Rumsfailed then ordered that this prisoner be sent back to Abu Graihib but the prisoner was purposefully not listed at that location, also an illegal act. Rumsfeld also admitted to signing orders for tougher interogation methods which violated the Geneva Conventions.

Rumfailed has commited at least three violations of the Geneva Convention thereby also violations of The Constitution of the USA. Recently it has been found out that even more detainees were "ghost detainees". The fact that Rumsfailed and Tenet have not been charged speaks volumes. If Congress wishes to garner any respect they should move forward with Rep. Rangle's Impeachment Declaration of Rumsfailed and also proscecute Ex. CIA Tenet.

because low and behold it is a great hunger stimulant and will spur those dieting into eating more.

23. And the "feeding tube torture" is just a "vigorous throat massage"
Recently Declassified Notes Reveal Brutal Treatment of Hunger Striking Detainees at Gitmo

...Large tubes – the thickness of a finger – were viewed by detainees as objects of torture. They were forcibly shoved up the detainees’ noses and down into their stomachs. Again, no anesthesia or sedative was provided. ...

Detainee Abdul-Rahman communicated that, “one Navy doctor came and put the tube in his nose and down his throat and then just kept moving the tube up and down, until finally Abdul-Rahman started violently throwing up blood. Abdul-Rahman tried to resist the ‘torture’ from this physician, but he could not breathe.

27. By that logic, the ones who die are just taking a serious nap.
I guess the ones who get beaten are just getting a vigorous massage.

Waterboarding's just a thorough bath.

Et cetera.

28. I would have to say force feeding them is the right thing to do
perhaps not violently, however. Remember when Margaret Thatcher let Bobby Sands and those other Irish heroes of the hunger strikes die? The whole world was disgusted by the English letting them starve as was I.

when he knows damn well what they are doing. I am merely commenting on the fact that there is no way they should be allowed to die by starving themselves.

32. Bobby Sands
Yes I remember Bobby Sands! Of course I remember Bobby Sands and I also remember the book you cannot find to buy "Under the Blanket". These fine Irishmen left a historical legacy with their hunger strikes and DEATH. That was almost 25 years ago now and no, we will NOT FORGET!

So it worked alright! If you and I are discussing it, it is not forgotten and they did not die in vain.

As for Margaret Thatcher ... :grr:
