Reid takes Senate into closed session over Iraq intelligence

Filed by RAW STORY

The Senate's Democratic leader Harry Reid (D-NV) unexpectedly pulled the Senate into secret session Tuesday afternoon in order to have closed discussion of Iraq intelligence, RAW STORY has learned.

The maneuver immediately shuttered the doors of the Senate and cleared the Senate press galleries. It has been invoked just 53 times in the history of the body. It was last used during the Clinton impeachment hearings.

Closed sessions were also employed in 1997 for the Chemical Weapons Convention, and in 1992 during debate over China's "Most Favored Nation" trade status.

The Senate can vote to end closed session by a simple majority. It is unknown how long the Senate will remain closed, Reid's office told RAW STORY.

Democrats Force Closed Meeting on Iraq

WASHINGTON - Democrats forced the Republican-controlled Senate into an unusual closed session Tuesday, demanding answers about intelligence that led to the Iraq war. Republicans derided the move as a political stunt.

In a speech on the Senate floor, Democratic leader Harry Reid said the American people and U.S. troops deserved to know the details of how the United States became engaged in the war, particularly in light of the indictment of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff.

Reid demanded the Senate go into closed session. With a second by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the public was ordered out of the chamber, the lights were dimmed, senators filed to their seats on the floor and the doors were closed. No vote is required in such circumstances.

"The Libby indictment provides a window into what this is really all about, how this administration manufactured and manipulated intelligence in order to sell the war in Iraq and attempted to destroy those who dared to challenge its actions," Reid said before the doors were closed.

GOP furious at closed Senate session
Minority leader calls for unusual secret meeting about prewar intelligence

WASHINGTON - Democrats forced the Republican-controlled Senate into an unusual closed session Tuesday, questioning intelligence that President Bush used in the run-up to the war in Iraq and accusing Republicans of ignoring the issue.

...

“The United States Senate has been hijacked by the Democratic leadership,” said Majority Leader Bill Frist. “They have no convictions, they have no principles, they have no ideas,” the Republican leader said.

In a speech on the Senate floor, Reid said the American people and U.S. troops deserved to know the details of how the United States became engaged in the war, particularly in light of the indictment of I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff.

Reid’s spokesperson said the purpose of the meeting was to persuade Republicans to reopen the investigation into the prewar intelligence, MSNBC.com’s Tom Curry reported. The Senate Intelligence Committee is chaired by Pat Roberts, R-Kan.

189. The Dems were lied to...but they were NEVER fooled.
This is a couple of years late. Maybe the Dems don't have internet and can't look at DU, but the Niger forgery and all the rest of the line of shit that Shrub sold us was transparent from the get-go. They should have demanded truth all along. Better late than never, I guess.

I get tired of hearing my spineless senator (Kerry) and others like him acting like he was blindsided by this "new" info. Puh-lease! He knew, but he was too intimidated by the politically hostile atmosphere to do the right thing. Hopefully the train is rolling in the right direction with this show of defiance. The problem is, the Dems call their own integrity into question in doing so.

Serves them all right. Hopefully they never take that road again.

They reported it the way they did. No other news source made the kinds of prognostications that Rawstory did. I think they're trying to be too out front, maybe to pull off a Drudge "blue dress" kind of trick and put themselves in the spotlight.

57. Wrong.. Rawstory is reliable to tell the truth...
there veiw on those facts, like everyone is not always on the mark. But if you cant tell the propagandists from the facts.. you need help. I have met the people that run Rawstory, and I have seen plenty to know they care about the truth, and have the connections to get it!

Im not calling you a troll.. It can be hard to tell fact from fiction in bushworld. I mean they are spending tons of money to get false info that supports their imaginary world (Armstong Williams, Guckert/Gannon, Miller, fox "news"......). I ask you to rethink why you think they are unreliable?

69. Fiction from fact
is just as hard in this world as it is there, if you ask me. When Rawstory suggests it knows why Reid did what he did, how is that different from propaganda? Believe me, I'd be delighted if something was to come of this, but I doubt Rawstory knows anything about it.

128. HOWS THAT DIFFERENT?? simple.. because rawstory NOT on payroll
.. I cant believe you dont see the difference, and yes, there is plenty of fiction on DU, online, on TV and in person... but propaganda is coordinated, like the "criminalization of politics" quote.. These people go and find out what other people are seeing and hearing and then they print that as best they can. Propaganda decides what it wants you to think and then gives you "facts" that support that idea. Those facts may be real, or totally made it, usually a mix...

The point is, Rawstory is doing its best to help us all see what is REALLY happening. They have 1 perspective and they are reporting what they see.. but together we can compare perspectives and get a better view of the TRUTH!

and as far as doubting they know anything... they know people.. all these officals have assistants and interns.. thats all I should say..
but think about it.. they seem to have good scoops ;)

23. So Frist is saying...What?
They (meaning Republicans) aren't locked out? Right? Frist doesn't want to discuss the CIA leak investigation? Is that what he's telling the American people? Just brush it under the rug because it means looking into the real reasons behind war and the lies Bush and Cheney told the American people?

If this is the case, I hope Reid does this every single day until they get the truth out.

36. Wolfie getting his knickers in a twist
How dare the Dems demand a debate into how Bushco doctored intelligence?

If he's worried about Congress balancing the budget, well, getting rid of an illegal war in Iraq would certainly take care of that.

24. Go Harry! They're down to the last hours of the session
Pukes were trying to pull the same trick of running out the clock in the Senate Intel Committee without answering questions about investigation into Bushco intel leading up to Iraq.

Stopping pukes from dealing with gas prices, budget cuts, etc. would definitely be in the country's best interests.

168. Retaliation for yanking the pre-war intel investigation.
You will recall that just yesterday Sen. Pat Roberts (asshole, KS) officially dumped his promise to further investigate pre-war intelligence.

This is a big deal, because if the Republicans don't go along with reopening the investigation, they could be fairly accused of facilitating the cover-up. I think it's too big to hide now.

In his second ambush in as many months, Harry called 'em on it before they were ready. I guarantee you the vote list for closing the session will soon be making the rounds, and soon everyone who voted to end the closed session will be wishing they hadn't.

The question is, is their ignorant base picking up on the story, or is it too complicated for them to understand?

The press is finally moving fast on this. Soon, what the Senate thought it knew will be irrelevant, if it wasn't bullshit in the first place. If the Republicans put their backs to the dike and pretend it isn't as bad as it looks, they'll be going for a swim soon.

Thank you Senator Reid!!! What you did today brought tears to my eyes. Many of your fellow Democrats have been waiting for our representatives to stand up and fight for us. WE WANT ANSWERS!!! Please continue to fight for us. Please fight for our troops. We all know they were sent to Iraq on false pretenses and we want it to stop. I don't care if you have to completely blow up the senate over this. We need the Republicans to be held accountable for their actions. God bless you as you go forward on this important matter. Please energize our party. We need a transfusion of straight talk and aggression on these matters. I think you did the right thing today judging by their reaction. I know I am not your constituent, but I wanted you to know how proud we are today of our Democratic Party!!

55. Done
Here's mine

There is no greater crisis facing our country and our Constitution than the use of phony intelligence to justify an illegal invasion of Iraq. The news media needs to accept the idea that Republicans should be held accountable for their illegal activities and that trying to aid them in their cover-up is unprofessional, unethical and morally wrong.

There is no problem currently facing our country that couldn’t be solved or ameliorated by ending the illegal war in Iraq. It has destroyed our economy, our civil rights, our standing as a leader in the free world and has taken the lives of far too many Americans. Even worse, it has destroyed the objectivity and professionalism of our news media and compromised the ability of Americans to get unbiased information about the leadership of our country.

Proud to be a Democrat today?

This is a great strategic move by Harry Reid. He wants to talk about something that truly effects every single American. The casus belli for Iraq was manufactured by a traitor in the Vice President's office, and possibly the president's office as well. One of the results of this was the outing of a covert CIA operative, who was trying to protect us from REAL weapons of mass destruction. This also brought down an entire CIA front operation and exposed every agent, contact, source or civilian who did any business at or with that company. Spy networks would have been compromised. If there is a WMD attack on this country, the blame should be laid at the door of Vice President Richard Cheney.

It's all tied together. Kudos for Harry Reid for taking this bold step and talking truth to the American people. I just wish we could hear what he's saying instead of listening to spin doctors...

148. Maybe it's true.
The Alito angle may have been a contributing consideration in deciding to doing this now rather than some other time.

Most people would agree that a President facing impeachment shouldn't be appointing new justices to the Supreme Court. In principle at least this initiative could be worked to force a better nominee for the court. Perhaps insist that the nominee be chosen by a bi-partisan search committee.

"The Senate can vote to end closed session by a simple majority."

If so, what does that say? As the Rethugs control the senate as well, it would seem that some of them are wanting a closed session. I told my partner, that I think Reid was approached by Repugs and THEY wanted a closed session so as not to look they are betraying the party.

vote--it's a fairly evenly divided house, get 30 dems and 20 repubs present, go into closed session, and you can stay there until the repubs outnumber dems. And who knows who's out of town.

Which is more likely? Dunno.

95. Well, This Harry Reid Critic Forgives Just About Everything Now.
I have lambasted Harry Reid here for years at the DU mostly motivated by a disappointment which only grew in light of Tom Daschle's miserable "leadership" within the U.S. Senate. His once, off-handed and wholesale early dismissal of many of our country's great anti-war activists who were challenging the Iraqi War as just fringe within the Democratic Party had really been an unfair and uncalled for broadside.

Well, that day is done. And as my mom would say, "son, that's all ancient history now."

Today, November 1, 2005, Harry Reid stood up for America, stood up for the American people and, yes, he stood the hell up for our troops.

I am sitting here in California overwhelmed with joy and appreciation and, most of all, great respect for this fellow from Nevada who has in one single shining moment demonstrated that he is, without any doubt, the best person to lead the Democrats in the U.S. Senate.

Harry, I doubt you'll ever see this, but I apologize for having you pegged you wrong.

I am so damned proud to call you my leader in the U.S. Senate.

And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your loud ringing of the liberty bell today to let the American people know just how wickedly George Bush and Dick Cheney were to mislead them into an unnecessary war by lying to the nation and to the world.

Thank you Senator Reid!

Mr. Frist, instead of your hysterical outburst concerning what you think of Democrats, why don't you address the issue at hand, specifically the manipulation of intelligence and the smear attack on those who clearly pointed out the false premise of the War on Iraq?

Kill the messenger, Frist, just like you killed those cats, eh?

WHO was in the US recently???

BERLUSCONI, that is who, and his whole crew.

You don't think some of those folks met with the Dems? It is rather customary for a cadre of folks in any delegation to slide over and meet with the opposition...ya gotta cover all your bases, just in case.

Berlusconi, after all, was the one who BEGGED the monkey not to go to war--as he said in an interview, just the other day. This is all about Niger, uranium, yellow cake, and so on!!! Why we went to war, how the monkey's bunch manipulated us, and I would just love to be a fly on the wall in the Senate, right about now.

The fact that the ALITO's WAY headline is being crushed in all this is simply icing on the cake.

142. Good press conference
He explained to the presstitutes that Dems wanted answers from Roberts that they'd been waiting over a year for. The senate had to be closed because they were discussing top secret information.

Every time the reporters tried to bring up R's claims of Dems "playing politics" he cut them off abruptly and told them to stop the "name calling" and move forward.

When he was done, he turned on his heel and left. Excellent. There's no need for Dems to stand around and let reporters badger them with R talking points.

Always leave them wanting more, as Harry T used to say.

Republicans were indignant. "The United States Senate has been hijacked by the Democratic leadership," Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee said. "Never have I been slapped in the face with such an affront to the leadership of this grand institution."

Harry Reid deserves a medal. Bill Frist can move aside and go count his stocks somewhere. Now the conversation has been forced back to the leak and Iraq. A brillant political move. A real investigation could be forthcoming.

If the Dems want any power (or relevance) they're going to have to take it.

They're also going to have to stop listening to the right wing's insinuations, lies and insults- and just DO IT.

Enough is enough ought to be their new slogan. They need to pull out every parliamentary stop that they can. Every single one.

Nothing freaks bullies out more than victims who decide to fight back and keep on doing so consistently.
