CNN: Syria rejects U.N. resolution
Syria rejects U.N. resolution
Tuesday, November 1, 2005

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- Syria has angrily rejected a U.N. Security Council resolution that demands Damascus cooperate fully in the investigation into the killing of Lebanon's former prime minister Rafik Hariri or face "further measures."

The United States, France and Britain had sponsored the resolution after a U.N. report published in October blamed Syrian security forces and its Lebanese allies for the bombing that killed Hariri and 20 others in Beirut on February 14. Syria denies the accusations.

Last-minute diplomatic haggling on Monday deleted a direct reference to the threat of sanctions on the Syrian government....

Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa said the U.N. report convicted Syria before it faced trial, and he wondered why the United Nations had assumed its forces were guilty just because they were in Lebanon at the time of the bombing.

He said...."We would have to point out accusations at the U.S. security organs as having been aware of terrorist attacks that were perpetrated in 9-11-2001..."....British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw was quick to respond to his comment, calling it "as the most grotesque and insensitive comparison." Other diplomats said it underscored Syria's isolation and the need for a warning....

4. Did al-Sharaa threaten the US and UK with exposure of their role in 9-11?
If so, I like it.

This is such a lot of transparent nonsense. What do we care about the PM of Lebanon...we will do the typical white man thing and make an entire nation pay for the ALLEGED crimes of a handful of people. SICK.

5. Hariri's Death
The only parties who benefited from his death were Bush and Blair. President al-Assad of Syria stood to gain NOTHING from his death and could not possibly have been involved in that vicious attack which killed him. I understand that the vehicle used in the murder was stolen in the USA and transported illegally into Lebanon. The only group that would do something like that had to be the CIA with the intention of discrediting al-Assad by pointing the finger at him.

This wouldn't be the first time that USA and UK agents are involved in the murder of innocents and the planting of evidence in order to discredit Iraqis or Middle Easterners:

And it won't be the last time that these radical right wing criminals do anything like that.

8. British, Syrian envoys trade barbs
Neither one of these guys sounds very sharp ...

The foreign ministers of Britain and Syria exchanged angry words over a UN resolution seeking to pressure Damascus into cooperating with an investigation into the murder of former Lebanese premier Rafiq al-Hariri.

Dismissing the adoption on Monday of the resolution as "illogical," Syrian Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara said implicating Syrian officials in the assassination was akin to implicating the US, Spanish and British governments in terrorist acts on their territory, including the 11 September 2001 attacks.

Demanding the right to respond on the floor of the UN Security Council, the furious British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, condemned al-Shara's comparison as "grotesque and insensitive".

He said al-Shara's "at best absurd" comments should allay any concerns among some UN Security Council members about the need to adopt a resolution to ensure Syrian cooperation with the assassination investigation.

11. Will Bush use this as a pretext for war?
The U.N. resolution said that if Syria didn't cooperate, there could be "unspecified repercussions". I wouldn't put it past Bush and Blair to use that flimsy reed as a pretext for war.

Mind you, neither leader has many extra troops to spare. That's the tricky thing about war mongering. You start running out of spare army pretty fast.
