Mild Version of Avian Flu Has Already Hit Conn.
Mild Version Of Avian Flu Has Already Hit Conn. --Birds Were Slaughtered In 2003 After Virus Sickened Them

Mild versions of the avian virus have appeared off and on in the United States for years, including a strain that infected thousands of laying hens at the largest egg farm in Connecticut two years ago.

The 4.7 million birds at Kofkoff Egg Farm in Lebanon and Bozrah faced slaughter in 2003 when the virus sickened thousands of them. It was a less virulent type than the disease now in Asia and Europe and there was no mass die-off.

Instead, the state took the unprecedented step of vaccinating the flock under a $16 million pilot program paid for by the state and federal governments. It cost far less than the $30 million the farm would have paid for destroying the flock. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's standing order for dealing with avian influenza calls for "depopulation" of the infected flocks.

Sooner or later, we all die of something.

For me, let it be bird flu.

I'm having a BBQ at 8PM tonight. Sick or well, please come. :D

flu" that is killing people in Asia. This is not even news.

6. this really needs to be emphasized....
Avian H5 influenzas are common and always have been. This report is likely the result of some reporter not knowing much about virology, epizootics, etc. You can't credibly cover the news if you can't understand what it means!

Meanwhile you cannot get a friggin human flu shot because of the bush bird flu terra and the supplies of tamiflu are all gone too.

The use of 'bird flu terra' by the administration is criminal.

I've been called everything here in the past few months from freeper to Rovian plant to being accused of working to further the illuminati agenda. You should see the little e-mail whispering campaigns that the Parched Water Lily and friends have carried out about me. Why, I'm positively evil. Somehow I find your accusation to be less than terrifying.

Even if certain people want to believe I'm a freeper or worse, I certainly wish Tinoire all the best in this endeavour. Starting this kind of independent project from scratch is hard -- and expensive. I heard they got hit with an outrageous bandwidth bill so I just gave them a couple of bucks. It's not much, but I hope it helps.

Avian flu is common enough. It's only the H5N1 strain that we need to be concerned about.

24. hate to tell you guys--Los Angeles the birds are mostly gone-pidgeons sick
Left L.A. for the last year-returned 2 months ago-
Noticed in the Studio City/Sherman Oaks area the birds are just gone. I am serious. When I lived here before you could always look up at any given moment and see a bird or 2 or a flock...not any more,

And today I saw the sickest looking pidgeon walking around outside of The Coffee Bean on Ventura Blvd in Studio City-it looked like hell-like it was about to keel-I then realized there used to be a lot of pidgeons--the only one I saw today was the sick one.

And I walk my dogs in the Laurel Canyon/Coldwater Wilderness Trails--NO BIRDS AT ALL-I always walked my dogs there and it is downright creepy now that the birds are gone.

Seriously, I think the virus is here and has hit the wild birds--I would bet on it.
It's either that or the air is so bad now the birds just up and left.

At this very moment there exists a BIRDLESS SKY in my area.

Anyone else notice this?

"At this very moment there exists a BIRDLESS SKY in my area."

There usually aren't many birds in the sky in the middle of the night. lol

You're making a pretty extraordinary claim. My guess is that you are basing it on severely limited evidence. I'd also have to say, that if it's true, others would have certainly noticed.

43. We lost a lot of birds here in the last two years.
Many of them were to the West Nile Virus.

I found dead ones in my back yard several times last summer, the health department wouldn't even pick them up anymore.

But I haven't seen a dramatic decrease in the number of birds that visit my feeders.

49. Oh, sorry.
No, I'm in the southern part of the country.

We notice differences in the types and numbers of birds based on the current weather and their migratory patterns.

Perhaps that might have something to do with why they are so scarce in your neck of the woods?

Uh-huh. I think you'd be able to find people that have noticed outside of this thread, if it's true. Like a neighbor perhaps, or your local Parks and Wildlife office. Or maybe a newspaper even.

I love the sound of busy birds singing and love seeing them flying around.
I think they're so interesting and so cute.

But the main problem is the food chain--If we break it we all die--all of us Humans.
If China has birdless areas where humans live we have to wonder.

I'm pretty sure that this has never happened before except in waste dumps and nuclear fallout areas.
