Israel, United States to fund laser that shoots down rockets

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel and the United States are to spend at least $57 million US for development of a laser cannon that can shoot down short-range missiles, an Israeli legislator and security officials said Tuesday.

A recent Israeli delegation successfully lobbied the U.S. Congress to approve the new funding package for the joint U.S.-Israeli Nautilus laser weapon project, said Israeli legislator Yuval Steinitz, who was part of the delegation.

Israel wants the Nautilus to help protect its northern border towns from Katyusha rockets fired by the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah. Israel claims Hezbollah now has 11,000 rockets aimed at Israel. (snip/...)

3. I Agree
Israel doesn't have a pot to piss in without billions from the US. It's like when Israeli jets come to the states for training, they claim that the Israeli government is paying for room, board, and fuel.

But the money for the Israeli military comes mostly from the US. I also believe that there have been some reports that show that Israel is having problems with poverty and with some of its citizens going hungry.

But they've got all kinds of money to spend on military equipment, but not food for their own people. Sounds just like a Third World country to me.

4. I second that opinion.
I think this is mainly a "public relations" weapon.

5. israel can't share the costs of anything
with the u.s. -- the ''price-tag'' for keeping israel in existence is way past that. this is just wool to pull over american eyes.
you say the two countries are sharing the costs of something -- and fail to mention how much the u.s. has sent to israel over the last few decades. laughable if you've been paying attention -- sad if you buy it.
