Detainee dies at U.S.-run prison

Associated Press

BAGHDAD — A 73-year-old male detainee has died at the U.S.-run Camp Bucca prison in southern Iraq, the military said Monday.
The detainee, who wasn’t identified by name or nationality, died Sunday afternoon of respiratory failure related to pneumonia at the Camp Bucca field hospital, the military said.

After an autopsy, the victim’s remains were to be given to relatives.

More than 12,000 detainees are being held at Abu Ghraib prison on the outskirts of Baghdad, Camp Bucca south of Basra city, and two other U.S. military camps in Iraq, many awaiting trial or, in some cases, formal charges. Many of the detainees are believed to be Sunni Arabs who were rounded up by U.S. and Iraqi forces on suspicion of supporting Sunni-led insurgent groups.

Other detainees are being held at Iraqi prisons around the country

1. Since we use Saddam's old prisons we must look the same to----
the people in Iraq. Wonder how many terrorist we have made in the last 2 years with our 'winning' team working their brains to the numb in the White House. What are these silly men thinking with all this killing?

6. a 73 year old detainee dies in prison and it makes the news....
But the "news" here is: Was this person convicted of a crime?
To spend the end of ones life away from loved ones in prison in Iraq - where we have imprisoned tens of thousands without due process or formal charges, on SUSPICION only, and later released them without so much as an "oops - sorry, our bad!" - well, that is what changes the dynamic here from just "A 73 year old dies of pneumonia"

10. The very idea someone has thought a 73 year old man
is a likely danger to invading forces is beneath contempt. What a shame he had to pay for their stupidity with his life.

4. What happened to the torture photos/videos
that the ACLU sued (and won) the release of? I thought that the deadline for their release was the 20th. It was expected that there would be an appeal issued on the last day. Has anybody heard anything about this?

13. Well, use the litmus test that Florida used for previously...
convicted felons in 2000, many of which STILL can't vote. So, about 5% of the people in the prisons there may have actually commited a crime.
