US Death Toll Nears 2000:Some Expect Momentum for Withdrawal of US Troops
U.S. death toll in Iraq nears 2,000
Some expect momentum to grow for withdrawal of U.S. troops

Edward Epstein, Chronicle Washington Bureau

Saturday, October 22, 2005

Washington -- It's a grim milestone that no one wants to see come about, but the United States is nearing 2,000 military deaths in Iraq.

With public opinion polls showing that a majority of Americans favor a partial or total withdrawal from Iraq 32 months after President Bush launched an invasion to oust Saddam Hussein, experts and advocates disagree on whether the looming benchmark will further erode public or congressional support for the war that the president promises to continue until a successful conclusion.

<snip>

About 15,200 American military personnel have been wounded in the war. Totals on Iraqis killed since March 2003 are only estimates, ranging from 15,500 to 72,100 if victims of violent crime since Hussein fell in April 2003 are included, according to the Brookings Institution's Iraq index.

<snip>

Dobbs said anti-war campaigners are focusing on Congress in an attempt to end funding for the war. "We've hammered Bush numerous times over Iraq, but Congress needs to be put on the hot seat because they authorized the war and continue to support it.''

1. This is the part that stands out:
--whether the looming benchmark will further erode public or congressional support--

No, the 2,000 death marker will increase public support for the war and be a lighning rod for recruitment.:eyes:

3. Cindy Sheehan can't do it alone
Why not lend a hand, elected Democrats?

Surely after five years of polishing Bush's shoes, you'd like to stand up and make yourselves useful to the nation.

...Wouldn't you?

5. we are not alone, have hope
I ran into a young man tonight that I did not know. He said to me, "Did you know that the war in Iraq is the same as if we had invaded Mexico? This Senator said this! He was right too!"

This was just one young man, but given the ilk of those that live around me I suspect that he is one that was likely for the war when it began and now realizes that it was all one big lie. He said to me, Iraq has done nothing to the United States. I told him I was very aware of this and that I am against all wars.

He seemed relieved to have had the chance to talk to me, a seemingly "older" person. I just told him that I wish he knew how very sorry I felt for him and his generation and I told him that I feel rather powerless at times but I go on anyway and I still try to fight the good fight for our country. He agreed with me. He said that we had to reclaim the USA for our people and that it has been stolen away from us based on lies.

So yes, there is hope. People are beginning to see the truth.

That "Senator" that he referred to I believe was, by the way I suspect was John Kerry. So maybe Kerry's message was heard much louder than we had thought.

9. We are alone because the Beltway Democrats won't stop the war
and our self-annointed "leaders" like Hillary and Biden will continue the war.

10. I am not sure why they do not.
They are not quite as stupid as the Bush Administration, surely they realize that this disaster is not accomplishing what the ruling class desired from it.

It is only wasting resources and distracting the US Government from squashing unrest elsewhere.

WASHINGTON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Cindy Sheehan, the military mother who
made her son's death in Iraq a rallying point for the anti-war
movement, plans to tie herself to the White House fence to protest
the milestone of 2,000 U.S. military deaths in Iraq.

"I'm going to go to Washington, D.C. and I'm going to give a speech at
the White House, and after I do, I'm going to tie myself to the fence
and refuse to leave until they agree to bring our troops home,"
Sheehan said in a telephone interview last week as the milestone
approached.

"And I'll probably get arrested, and when I get out, I'll go back and
do the same thing," she said.

The death toll among U.S. military forces since the March 2003
invasion stood at 1,996 on Sunday.
