Tropical Storm Alpha Forms in the Atlantic
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 04:21 PM by MIMIC
MIAMI (AP) -- The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Alpha has formed, setting the record for the highest number of storms in an Atlantic season.

Alpha is the season's 22nd tropical storm and marks the first time a letter from the Greek alphabet has been used because the list of storm names is used up. The previous record of 21 storms stood since 1933.

6. Let's hope this doesn't get bigger.
Or else headline writers will have a field day with "Hurricane blows buildings to Alpha bits".

10. Interesting.
Looks like on Tuesday there may be two storms, side by side, going north in the Atlantic along the Eastern Seaboard.

I'm almost positive that I recall some time in the 1970's, when we got pretty far into the alphabet that year, that a second list of names was generated in case we actually used up all the ones on the first list.

Once again my husband (bless his heart) has put up shutters, tomorrow we will take in mega patio furniture, plants, etc. We left for 2 week vacation last Tues. - drove to Brunswick, GA, spent the nite, next morning drove back the same way we went. Please, bring on the end of this!!!1111!!!

13. We are right in the path
on the east coast. Probably won't be much but we expect Fla. Power & Light will milk this like everything else and let us go w/o power for a week then HAVE TO RAISE RATES due to repairs. Our homeowners ins. will increase 10 fold even thou we have never had a claim in 40 years. Well, Bush rules and corps. win every time. Sorry, am storm weary and so pissed at what is going on in this country.

18. From Jeff Masters' blog
Ever since the formation of two major hurricanes in July made it clear that the Hurricane Season of 2005 was going to challenge 1933 as the busiest season ever, I've been expecting to see the words "Tropical Storm Alpha" emblazoned on a hurricane tracking chart. Well, we've got the record now. The formation of Tropical Storm Alpha, the 22nd storm of the season, now makes 2005 the busiest hurricane season of all time. Still, it looks really strange to see the words "Tropical Storm Alpha" on the hurricane tracking charts, and gives a surreal cast to Hurricane Season of 2005 as we approach the Halloween season.

20. INSANE. I refuse to beleive that global warming is not causing this
September was one of the warmest on record. The ice caps are melting. There are so many hurricanes/tropical storms that they ran out of names. WHAT IS THIS?

28. Global warming vs. number of storms.
To me, saying that Global warming is responsible for the high number of storms, is going out on a limb.

But when you factor in that Wilma was the strongest, most powerful storm ever recorded, w/ the lowest barometric pressure...(in October when the storm season is usu. dying...and when storms of smaller magnitude are more the norm)

...coupled with SIZE of the average hurricane this season.

....well that turns "going out on a limb" into "walking accross a pretty stable footbridge".

...also I remember reading something (on a piece of paper back in the early 90's) that an almost imperceptable rise could cause the Missippi and the area of the Mississppi delta to become completely flooded. The same article also made a cynical reference to buying real estate further inland because it would one day be waterfront property...if someone wants to try and find it.

Global Warming...(the other GW) is here -to stay.
