AOL laying off more than 700 employees
Firm shut down its Orlando, Fla., call center; trimmed jobs in other areas

NEW YORK - America Online is laying off more than 700 employees, primarily in member-services call centers, in response to the ongoing decline in subscribers for its dial-up Internet-access services.

Under the plan, the Time Warner Inc. unit is closing its center in Orlando, Fla., and is cutting positions in centers in Jacksonville, Fla., and Tucson, Ariz., and at AOL’s corporate headquarters in Dulles, Va.

The cuts amount to about 4 percent of AOL’s 20,000 global work force. The company hasn’t announced layoffs of this magnitude since December 2004.

8. H-1B VISA increase on top of it
Kennedy of all people is in the Judiciary committee trying to introduce legislation to increase the H-1B Visa by 60,000.

This is incredible. The H-1B VISA is now very well documented as a tool to displace American engineers and computer scientists with cheaper foreign labor. The DOL actually approved a H-1B VISA engineer for 10 bucks an hour!

His phone is Edward Kennedy (MA) 202-224-4543

and he needs to be called today. They are going to do this tomorrow.

10. Wow!
:wow: Kennedy? He must have sold out.

This is what upsets me. So much concern in this country for other world issues,
but who is focusing on the problems at home?

How many thousands and thousands of people here losing their jobs to outsourcing
and people reduced to poverty and victims of natural disasters etc.
What is everyone going to do?

And Engineers and Computer Scientists being outsourced with cheap foreign labor? I'm shocked.
I always assumed it was the laborers and the other lower end jobs!

My Dad used to work as an Aerospace/Computer/Electric Engineer in the 50's, 60's, and 70's,
and he was already predicting something like this......

He must be turning over in his grave.

Welcome to G.H.B.'s "New World Order" :sarcasm:

3. My guess is that AOL's business model just isn't valid anymore when
so many people are switching from dialup to broadband.

5. I just want to say I hate AOL SO MUCH, on so many levels, in so many ways
It sucks that it's the ordinary guys in the trenches taking the hit, and not the assholes in the boardrooms.

6. Thats just great .......
its bad enough now with the Indi speaking help center....they usually give up when you ask them a set of complex questions. They then refer you to calling a toll-free number.

9. Well - Duh -
- AOL has been giving horrible service for years. Maybe if they improved their product and their service they wouldn't have to worry about laying people off.
