Rice Wants to Follow Afghan Model in Iraq

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday outlined a strategy of helping Iraqis clear out insurgents and build durable, national institutions as she sought to reassure jittery members of Congress about the path to peace in Iraq. Rice said the United States will follow a model that was successful in Afghanistan.

Starting next month, she said, joint diplomatic-military groups _ Provincial Reconstruction Teams _ will work alongside Iraqis as they train police, set up courts, and help local governments establish essential services.

...

Rice heralded the referendum on the charter as "a landmark" and said the US. strategy was moving from a stage of transition to a stage of preparing a permanent Iraqi government.

"Clear areas from insurgent control, to hold them securely, and to build durable, national Iraqi institutions," Rice said before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
"Our strategy is to clear, hold, and build," she said. "The enemy's strategy is to infect, terrorize, and pull down."

3. "...a model that was successful in Afghanistan."...
and what model would that be? The warlords seizing control and terrorizing the people w/i their own little turfdoms? or would it be the return of the taliban's suppression of women? or maybe the prezident/prime minister holed up in a compound and scarely ever venturing out side its walls? Exactly which model R we holding up as successful?

10. "Taliban-Lite" in an official Islamic state?
Afghan`s `Taliban-lite` constitution
New government to be officially Islamic republic

Those who were hopeful the new Afghan government would be open, pluralistic and tolerant of other religions, extending rights to women and minority religions will be disappointed by the first draft of the constitution.

It is a blueprint for a repressive state, what the U.S. Commission for International Religious Freedom calls "Taliban-lite."

Taliban Ex-Governor Elected to Afghan Parliament

Mawlawi Mohammed Islam Mohammadi, who was the Taliban's governor of Bamiyan province when the fifth-century Buddha statues were blown up with dynamite and artillery in March 2001, was chosen to represent the neighboring province of Samangan, according to results posted by the U.N.-Afghan election organizers. Election law did not bar former Taliban officials from participating in the Sept. 18 polls.

13. Oh wait, it was the UN.
I don't know if NATO is there, but the UN is. What's the name of their peacekeeping group there? Some guys just got busted for smuggling and claimed to be from this group.

Anyway, the UN was the original plan Condi. You guys rejected that. It might be too late now.

16. That is precisely what we're doing right now
Kerbala, Najaf, Basra have gone to Shi'ite militias.

Diyala province has gone to a "former" Saddam intelligence officer, one "Col. Theya."

Sadr City has gone to the Medhi army.

Five Baghdad neighborhoods, some half a mile from the Green Zone, have gone to the insurgency itself.

But by God, we're stopping the flow of insurgents on the Syrian border!
