Bush Popularity Sinks in California, Poll Finds
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters)

California voter approval of President Bush's performance has dropped sharply since the Iraq war, a poll released on Thursday found.

A Field poll of 788 Californians in the first two weeks of July found that 49 percent approved of Bush's job performance, down from 61 percent in April, and 74 percent after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. In the survey, 41 percent disapproved of the president's work.

Areas of growing dissatisfaction included the economy and the job Washington is doing in making Iraq a stable country. Yet more than three-quarters of those polled said they were either somewhat or very satisfied by the job the U.S. military did in overthrowing Saddam Hussein. ---

26. So goes the nation ?
Bush's ratings plummet in California; Less than half say he's doing a good job, the least since 9/11

....

While national polls still show Bush riding a wave of popularity, the sharp drop in California, which has 12 percent of the nation's population, is likely to start appearing elsewhere, said Mark DiCamillo, the poll's director.

"If you're looking for cracks in support for a Republican president, you should look to California, since that's the first place they're likely to show up," he said.

....

In the Field Poll released today, only 24 percent of the state's Democrats are pleased with the job Bush is doing, compared with 84 percent of the Republicans and 43 percent of the independents. While he has the backing of 73 percent of California's conservatives, moderates are split almost evenly over the job the president is doing.

Everyone hates Davis, though.

11. i still can't believe it's that high
where did they find the 49% who approved??

and it's still higher than the 41% who disapproved??

it's nice that the approval percentage is dropping, but it's still way too high considering how badly junior has f*cked up.

Rethugs live in Kern county, Orange County, San Diego county and a few others. In the agricultural areas retugs outnumber Dems. In the cities it is mostly the other way around except for San Diego.

25. Remember that approval ratings are always a lot higher
than the "will vote" for numbers. Clinton was in the 70's during the impeachment and the only way he would ever get 70% of the vote is if he were running against Jeffrey Daumer.

Also Davis will survive. All he has to do is start running ads linking Bush to Enron et/al and the screwing of California. I'm not a Davis fan myself but he's shrewd and isn't above fighting dirty.
