Democrats criticize president for citing court pick's religion

WASHINGTON - Democratic senators criticized President Bush for citing Harriet Miers' religion as a major reason to support her nomination for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Last week, Bush told reporters that "part of Harriet Miers' life is her religion" and is one of the aspects of her character that people should know about before they form opinions about her.

...

Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., said this was the first time a president has pointed to a nominee's religion when giving a reason to support her, and "it's going to make for a very difficult line of inquiry at our hearing."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., added: "To say that religion becomes a major qualification, I think that is a huge problem."

3. But it also doesn't say that a nominee's religion can't be discussed..
by either the nominator or the opposition. It was a mistake for * to discuss it, IMO, but I think conservative pundits are actually doing a decent job at criticizing. This is one time where I would urge Democrats to stay on the sidelines and let them keep eating their own.

4. Well, thanks to the Dems for making this very important point --
My guess would be that most religious Americans, those of the non-fundamentalist variety, are opposed to religion getting mixed up with governing.

5. That would be a HIGH CRIME violation of the USC.
Good thing we don't bother with a US Constitution any more.

6. Slap on the wrist for still another major violation.
Is someone going to explicitly state that there is such a thing as the separation of church and state? Probably not.
