INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A state senator has changed her mind about sponsoring a bill that would prohibit homosexuals and unmarried people in Indiana from using medical science to assist them in having a child.
Senator Patricia Miller of Indianapolis says the issue has become more complex than she thought. So she is withdrawing it from consideration.

Miller said earlier this week that state law does not have regulations on assisted reproduction and should have similar requirements to adoption in Indiana.

She acknowledged when she proposed it that the legislation would be "enormously controversial."

The bill defined assisted reproduction as causing pregnancy by means other than sexual intercourse, including artificial insemination, the donation of an egg or embryo and sperm injection.

7. Uh,
I don't think she's seen the light. Me thinks she'll regroup and try again later - unless she's voted out, which is probably NOT going to happen in the great RED state of Stupidana.

14. Definitely
I think she was thinking about reelection and realized she'd be screwed. Guess she didn't think anyone would care about those homos and godless single women (because, of course, godly women get themselves a man at 18). Surprise, surprise.

19. I think the light shone on her and her wacked out fundie bill
and she was shamed into dropping this disaster of a bill. Even when Republicans occasionally do the right thing, it's invariably for all the wrong reasons.

2. It's about damn time!
Clearly she never, ever thought this thing through and probably didn't even realize the uproar that it would cause once it was brought to light.

She's a dope for bringing this up to begin with and hopefully will think twice about doing this a second time. Nuff said.

4. Please don't imagine we've seen the last of this....
This was just "testing the waters".
They never expected the bill to pass into law;
they simply wanted to test people's reaction to it.

It will go back on the shelf for now;
perhaps some parts will be re-written
with language that SEEMS less draconian.

But sooner or later, it will be back.
People like this NEVER give up, NEVER stop
until someone STOPS them.

10. Well, if they were testing the reaction, looks like the answer's clear
even for whackjobs like them: watch your fucking step around this. People are paying attention.

16. If they'd restricted the law to gays, they MIGHT have had a chance
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 12:42 PM by rocknation
Obviously, they were counting on public support fueled by anti-gay, godless-swinging-singles sentiment. Much to their surprise, the bulk of the heat came from single heterosexuals. Count on the next version of the law to target same-sex couples only.

13. Give yourselves a pat on the back, DU!
From Indystar.com:
State Sen. Patricia Miller, R-Indianapolis, issued a one-sentence statement Wednesday saying: "The issue has become more complex than anticipated and will be withdrawn from consideration by the Health Finance Commission."

TRANSLATION: "The issue has become more complex because somehow, the public has found out about it, they're not pleased that it's going to hurt gays and unmarried heteros for SOME reason, and we're not going to be able to sneak it through."

What started out as a single post on the Indiana DU forum (which I confessed I nearly missed) grew stronger, bigger and faster than hurricane Katrina. Don't think for a second that Miller didn't feel our wind! This is proof once again that they'll back down when they see they're going to get what they dish out--WAY TO GO, DU!

:applause:

15. Either that, or those women who use surrogates got to her
Many do it because they cannot carry to term, others do it because they don't want the stress, others do it because the husband wants a biological kid but they don't give a crap either way.

What a stupid woman, she needs to get her nose out of other people's wombs.
