Bush to push Americans to cut energy use as costs soar

WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - With U.S. heating fuel bills expected to soar this winter, the Bush administration on Monday will unveil a national campaign to show households, businesses and the federal government how to save energy and reduce their heating expenses.

The government has warned Americans to get ready for higher heating fuel bills this winter, due in part to the supply disruptions caused by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina in the Gulf of Mexico.

For consumers who warm their homes with natural gas, their winter costs would be 52 percent higher nationally from last year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

The Energy Department's analytical arm forecast heating oil expenses would rise 34 percent and electricity bills would be up 11 percent.

1. So how about parking AF1 for a bit?
Maybe forego a few trips to El Rancho Puerco?

Nope. Not gonna happen.

2. He gonna cut back AF1
to two jet engines instead of the usual four in addition to making fewer trips.

He will order the auto manufacturers to reduce all engines to four cylinders.

Sure he will.

The poor will save so the rich can live as usual.

12. Bush has no concept of the effect of high prices on real people.
For guys like him living in the bubble of wealth and privilege, where the government pays for ever dollar of his own energy comsumptkion, he really thinks that Joe Sixpack has to hear from the Idiot in Chief before cutting back.

These guys talk markets and incentives, but in reality they have no clue of how the discipline of markets beats up on little guys. They live in the no-bid, crony capitalist, rip off world of the elites. They have escaped the earth's gravity while it still weighs on the rest of us.

14. How about telling CEO's to allow TELECOMMUTING
which would save untold millions of gallons per day, decrease pollution and increase productivity.

Think they'll do that? It's not 'old school' CEO style, so I highly doubt it, but it's the ONE THING that would truly decrease driving.

17. I agree with you on telecommuting
There are a number of jobs which really only require a phone and a computer. Before I retired, that was the kind of job I had. There was really no reason for me to drive to and from an office location, but the company had no interest in exploring the possibility.

In addition to saving the gas used by each employee who telecommutes, it seems that smaller office space would be required, which would further reduce expenses used in heating and cooling.

I also believe we need a windfall profits tax on the oil and gas companies. If they are making record profits, with the country being crushed by staggering debt, it would help pay for reconstruction costs associated with Katrina and Rita.

26. I would support that. It would work for my job, but doesn't work for
every job.

I always telecommute during a New England snowstorm. I won't risk my life driving to work, which is 48 miles one-way for me.

And when I do drive into work, I drive at 55 mph. I started doing that when gas prices went over $3.00/gallon. I got an extra 2-3 mpg doing that.

38. Telecommuting Rocks, But Driving Slow on the Freeways is Scary
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 11:40 AM by AndyTiedye
I telecommute 3 days out of 5 (more lately) and I'm much more productive that way.

I wouldn't try 55 on the freeways around here. Some truck would turn me into road-kill.
Here we are more likely to buy hybrids than slow down.
I see more hybrids every time I drive.

A Prius @ 70 still burns less gas than a Civic @ 55.

Seriously, I will not sacrifice one additional megawatt/gallon of gas until the Bush Administration demonstrates a commitment to investing serious money in alternative energy programs, and forcing the oil and gas/auto industry to increase energy efficency.

19. Estimates
Seem to be on the low side. Consider that Alberta ships out natural gas and the heating cost are going up 83% for the month of Oct over Sept of this year. The 52% number is baloney unless there is a subsidy built in.

Student and senior share fears of looming gas price hikes

With the price of natural gas expected to go through the roof this month, a city university student is fearing the worst.

Direct Energy says a typical northern Alberta homeowner can expect a $155 gas bill in October, up from $83 in September - an 87% gain.
