Parish president: FEMA still fumbling (despite personal note from *Co)
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/10/02/hurricanes/index.html

(CNN) -- The president of St. Tammany Parish accused the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Sunday of continuing to mismanage the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a charge denied by an agency spokeswoman.

"I met the president personally," Kevin Davis told CNN's "Late Edition."

"I actually drafted a note, and he signed it. It said, 'We are going to help you,'" the parish president said.
"I think he was sincere. He hugged me, and I believe in him. There is a disconnect apparently from that point down through the FEMA program."

<snip>

"It's the bureaucratic part that, once they make the request for me on my behalf, for the past five weeks, I don't get a response," Davis said.

<snip>

That process has not worked, Davis said. Even basics such as water, fuel and food were obtained only with difficulty.

"It took us several weeks to get that rolling in here after just hollering and screaming," he said.

Yep. There's a disconnect alright!

Peace.

2. in beaumont tx (where i live) fema was not releasing generators
that were badly needed by the local officials to get the water and sewer systems up. the generators were sitting at our local black hole (area entertainment complex) waiting for the "correct paperwork" and authorization. the fema excuse was that they wanted to make sure the correct generators were used for the correct purposes. i would think that the city engineers and maintenance staff would know what they need but i guess fema is smarter than them and me. anyway, the county judge finally told the local police to go seize the generators and that made fema FINALLY give them out. they had just sat there for days.

4. County judges and local police may have to take over...
This administration has petrified the State and Federal governments.

(talk about a situation ripe for exploitation... inexcusable!)

5. My in-laws live in St. Tammany Parish.
My sister-in-law returned home top Lacombe this weekkend and her grandson can finally start school again in Pearl River, MS. It is a huge mess down there. Slidell is just devastated. She has cousins living in RVs in her driveway because their homes in Slidell flooded.

It's been 5 weeks and there is still a huge mess. They still have a tarp on their roof after 5 weeks. They just got electricity, well and septic service back. (And they're the lucky ones who still have a house.) What a total disaster.

7. related: Parish chief demands FEMA apology
http://edition.cnn.com/2005/US/10/03/tammany.fema/

CNN) -- The president of St. Tammany Parish Monday demanded an apology from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its claim that he had recommended it hire his construction company to develop a property to house people displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

"I am waiting for a full and immediate apology from FEMA for untrue remarks," Kevin Davis said in a written statement. "The FEMA spokesperson is a liar."

FEMA had told CNN Sunday that the agency expected to have more than 1,000 housing units up and running in the area shortly, but that Davis himself had contributed to delays because he recommended to the agency that his construction company be hired to develop a property to which he has personal ties. (Full story)

Davis said in his statement that he does not own a construction company, and that he owns no land other than the site of his flooded home.

<snip>

"I do not own a construction company. I did not attempt to lease land to FEMA," Davis said Monday. "The only land I own is the lot my flooded home sits on. This is absurd.

"I want to find housing for the people of St. Tammany Parish. I do not want to spend my time refuting idiotic statements from FEMA spokespersons," he said. "I expect an immediate, full and public apology, and then I want to get back to work. People here need housing, not words."

8. they lie abt everything, don't they
here i was sitting here thinking, i never knew kevin davis had a construction company

it's hopeless, you cannot believe one word from this gov't, it is all lies, not just distortions but completely invented stories, this story about president davis is the least of it, the cover-up of the crimes & the true death toll is only just getting fired up

even some here on DU are happy to fall in line w. the revised "facts" abt new orleans' crime & gangs

but this particular story just proves to me...even if you know the area...they can make a lie sound believable enough that you'll fall for it

why make up a lie abt whether or not a man owns a construction company when it's gonna get found out?

9. because the lie gets out there in a big way - the truth is always
a footnote -

it's the GOPpiggie way - and so far it has worked wonderfully to convince the public that they are not to believe their lying eyes.
