WASHINGTON, July 16 (Reuters) - A classified Pentagon document raises serious questions about the credibility of an Iraqi defector whose statements led U.S. officials to believe an American pilot shot down during the 1991 Gulf War still may be alive, officials said on Wednesday.

Defense officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, also said a team from the Defense Intelligence Agency was in Iraq looking for proof of whether Navy Capt. Michael Scott Speicher is dead or alive.

"One thing that we are confident in is that we will find enough substantiating evidence to lead us to a proper conclusion, whatever that may be. We're dedicated to determine what his fate was," said one defense official.

The Navy last October reclassified Speicher's status as "missing/captured," rather than simply "missing in action," reflecting the belief that Iraqi forces may have seized him alive after his F/A-18C Hornet went down on Jan. 17, 1991.
