Administration threatens veto over terror-war detainee amendments


The White House threatened Friday to veto the Senate's $440 billion military spending bill if it restricts the Pentagon's treatment of terror-war detainees.

It's the second time this year the Bush administration has threatened to veto a Senate defense measure over Republican-sponsored amendments that would impose limits on how the U.S. military can detain, treat or prosecute terrorism suspects.

Friday's threat, in a letter to Senate leaders, signals a possible battle that could come at a risky time for President Bush. Polls show dwindling public support for the Iraq war and widespread dissatisfaction with the administration's handling of the response to Hurricane Katrina.

The letter Friday also threatened to veto the spending measure for several other reasons, including its dropping of an additional $7 billion that Bush wants.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Friday threatened to veto a $440.2 billion defense spending bill in the Senate because it wasn't enough money for the Pentagon and also warned lawmakers not to add any amendments to regulate the treatment of detainees or set up a commission to probe abuse.

Last summer, Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and John Warner of Virginia and others sought legislation banning cruel and degrading treatment of prisoners.

The administration has been criticized for holding prisoners at Guantanamo Bay indefinitely. Critics have also questioned whether administration policies led to abuses at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

They really *are* publicly threatening these days on the very idea that *anything* deserves an investigation or even a question aren't they?

I'm trying to think of why on earth *any* American of any political persuasion would think that this is "good" or even "American" or something that should occur in a "democracy."

Is it me or has this wagon we call the United States really truly run off the rails. I don't mean that as a joke or an exaggeration. Forbidding investigations? What sort of hubris does a demand like that take?

All a veto would do is leave funding at last year's levels. The Congress will vote monthly continuing resolutions to pay out the same cash as last year. Unfortunately, a veto would not bring the troops home, though I wish it would.

I guess we should just ignore the increased requirements over there due to the insurgency, ignore the mission not accomplished, and leave those poor bastards over there without sufficient funding to even cover their asses or provide basic supplies, never mind "promote democracy."

If DOD has to rely on last year's funding levels due to continuing resolutions, they are gonna be in a world of hurt. Watch bases here in the states and around the globe get stripped of their funding just to keep pace...ships in port due to no fuel, eyestrain due to lights turned out, needed, programmed repairs not made, contracts cancelled, and CIVILIANS laid off (that'll make THEM chimpco supporters for life--NOT)...

Way to go, draft dodger!!!!

But you can be damned sure that "no bid" Halliburton, et. al., will get THEIR cash up front.
