DeLay Goes on Radio and TV to Proclaim Innocence

Representative Tom DeLay left a
Texas Republicans' meeting
Thursday in Representative Roy
Blunt's office.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 - Representative Tom DeLay went on a media blitz on Thursday, a day after his indictment on charges of conspiracy in his home state, Texas, angrily proclaiming his innocence and saying that Democratic leaders in Congress were working with a Democratic prosecutor in Texas to try to destroy his career.

Mr. DeLay went on radio and television as his lawyers claimed their first procedural victory in the case. They said a trial judge had agreed not to issue an arrest warrant for Mr. DeLay and would let him appear voluntarily at a court hearing next month in Austin, the Texas capital.

The decision spared Mr. DeLay a potentially awkward encounter with the police in Travis County, where the indictment was issued, and the possibility that he might be handcuffed in front of cameras. A lawyer for Mr. DeLay, Dick DeGuerin, said in a telephone interview that the decision by Judge Bob Perkins of the 331st Judicial Criminal District Court, a Democrat, was "the right thing to do."

"I've never seen more support of my colleagues for me, and they want to see me continue the work that I've been doing," Mr. DeLay said on Fox News Radio. "It was obvious to me that what the Democrats have done has united us stronger than we ever have been."

2. Boston Globe Delay article: Cracks seen in GOP front on DeLay
Cracks seen in GOP front on DeLay
Some voice doubt leader will return to House position
By Rick Klein, Globe Staff | September 30, 2005

WASHINGTON -- The united front Republicans built to support ousted House majority leader Tom DeLay showed signs of crumbling yesterday, with conservatives threatening a leadership challenge and some moderate Republicans saying they don't think DeLay, facing criminal conspiracy charges in Texas, will ever come back to House leadership.

Sign up for: Globe Headlines e-mail | Breaking News Alerts Members of the conservative Republican Study Committee, upset with Congress's spending, said they are prepared to challenge some of House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert's top lieutenants if the case against DeLay isn't resolved by year's end. They warned that the three-way power-sharing arrangement Hastert set up in Delay's absence can't last into the next House session, which begins in January.

''The reality of the ordeal faces is not as rosy as everyone's hopes and aspirations," said Representative Zach Wamp, Republican of Tennessee, who said he plans to seek the number three post, House majority whip, if DeLay isn't back in power. ''Everyone's rooting for Tom DeLay to quash this indictment and prevail. But the realistic view is, this is going to take some time, and therefore the conference has to go forward."

Meanwhile, some moderates who have clashed with DeLay were already speaking as though his temporary resignation from leadership is permanent. Yesterday, as DeLay vacated the majority leader's office space, Representative Christopher Shays, a Connecticut Republican, said it was ''doubtful" that the 11-term Texas Republican would ever return to leadership unless the criminal case ends quickly in his favor.

28. He is, and not just physically
This is a nobody with overarching needs to be somebody. Drunk with power, he's burned a swath of which Sherman would have been proud.

Needing to compensate for his lowly birth and other self-perceived deficits, he smashed and hammered his way to fearsome power. This is a truly dangerous organism, and as such, he'll be quite vicious when cornered.

4. OBL is "guilty" without us seeing a shred of proof. Canadian men
with dark skin are sent to Syria to be tortured. Without a shred of proof. Iraq had "WMD" and so had to be invaded & occupied. Without a shred of proof.

A GRAND JURY INDICTED you, delay. Be thankful you weren't given the same kind of "justice" you & your rightwingnut thugs want for everyone else.

5. Soon he'll whine about being tried and convicted by the "liberal" media
Of course as long as he can proclaim his innocence in the media, all is ok.

8. This is what is funny:
But not funny:

When in office, the GOP strategy is to paint the two institutions that hold our big bad government accountable - the courts and the media - as incompetent and corrupt.

Yet the GOP during elections claims that their opposition is incompetent or corrupt.

In other words, the only consistent thing is they play to the gullible folks ibn the cheap seats.

So he takes the fight to the court of public opinion.

Scum.

9. Delay and the GOP wouldn't recognize 'the right thing to do' if it
bit them in the ass. The fact that Delay's lawyer is commending a Democrat for doing the right thing by not embarrassing him with a police confrontation is pathetic. You know the Rovian Rightwing would have relished an opportunity to publicly handcuff or humiliate a Democrat. That's the whole 'swiftboat morality' one can expect from them.

29. Don't forget the HUNDREDS of shots we've seen of the Clintons' friend,
Susan McDougal, who refused to lie about them to save herself with Ken Star, as she trudged in and out of court rooms, shacked both at wrists and ankles. She was also forced to live in solitary most of her appalling prison sentence.

Free now, though, no thanks to MEpublicans!

17. Tell it to the judge, bug man.
You're not being charged in the court of public opinion. You're going to a real court with a real judge and you're facing real jail time. So trying to spin this for public consumption is a waste of your time and ours.

in TRIMPAC. The Texas House Speaker was one of the main players in Tom DeLay's scheme. Did he turn state evidence to save his ass? Not a word about him!

23. Isn't that what Martha Stewart went to jail for? "Proclaiming Innocence"
- wasn't that the "LIE" that she told to manipulate the public regarding her insider trading activities?

I say they set that standard and they need to adhere to it.

Off to jail with you, hammerboy!

constituents. I heard one call in to the radio yesterday and say he got a call from a recording of Tom DeLay proclaiming his innocence. It wasn't even a talk show, it was a music show.

26. Now we KNOW he's guilty
Compare the actions of someone who did it to someone who didn't.

A person who didn't do it makes a public statement of innocence, gets a lawyer and works to clear himself of the trumped-up charges.

A person who did it sounds like he's trying to recite the monologue in The Blues Brothers where John Belushi told Carrie Fisher why he missed their wedding. "It's Not My Fault I Swear To God!"

At this time, Tom DeLay is screaming about locusts and earthquakes.
